Dear Science-minded CSS community members!

The Upper School Research and Experimentation Class at CSS is doing an experimental project and we invite you to participate as citizen scientists.

We propose to collect information on all of the large predators in our region. Here's what we'd like you to help us with:

Any time you see a large predator (listed below), please report it to us via email at [email protected] and tell us exactly where and when you saw it. Any other relevant information is useful too, such as if it was eating a squirrel or leading its babies around. Perhaps we can note the last bear wandering around before hibernation begins!

Bear on Campus Any of the following animals is on our target list:
Mountain lion
Bear
Coyote
Fox
Bobcat

For extra credit, feel free to also take a picture and share it on Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #CSSpredatorresearch and tagging The Colorado Springs School or @CSSKodiaks.

We can't use past records. Don't inform us about the bear in your tree in August. Only records from this moment forward are useful to us. Our goal is to make a census of these species and map their distributions. From this we can calculate population density and hours of activity. We hold open the option of repeating this in the spring, when we might be able to discover information about dens, breeding cycles, and brood sizes.

The current project will only be active until December 5, 2015. Let us hear from you! We'll post the map at school when we're finished. Thank you very much for helping with this study.

Upper School Science Teacher
