Pottery is one of the oldest forms of artisan creation. And, with excavated pieces dated as early as 29,000 BC, it is definitely also one of the most long-lasting. Its original purpose, creation of vessels for storage and utility purposes, remains the primary purpose of pottery today. But artisans, with function at the core of their creations, are artists at the core of their being. And many potters today are more aptly called ceramic artists, with creations that are more for the sake of beauty than for functional purpose.
Today's line-up consists of a range of makers that work in clay. Most produce sturdy stoneware or pretty porcelain for kitchen and table use. Some also create artwork and decor. But, being artists at heart, their functional wares are also works of art.
