We went ancient on the names of God series with the story of Gideon. We found another rare name for God in the book of Judges chapter 6: Yahweh ShalomIn this chapter, Israel is under discipline from God for their disobedience. Israel does finally cry out to God. So God sends a prophet...but they don't really turn to God. Finally the Angel of the Lord -- appears to Gideon in the winepress (as he is hiding) and calls him "Mighty Warrior." Eventually, the Angel of the Lord asks for sacrifice so Gideon prepares it and offers it. In a "miraculous God moment" the sacrifice is consumed! When Gideon saw that he was the angel of the Lord, he said, " O Lord God! For now I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face."
In this fearful exclamation, Gideon believed that as an unworthy, undeserving man he will be killed by the glory of God. Watch how God meets him in the next verse:
The Lord said to him, "Peace to you, do not fear; you shall not die." Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and named it The Lord is Peace. Our God is a God of PEACE...event when we don't deserve it!
