WORSHIP AND FREEDOM
What did Jesus come for? What was His Purpose? Fortunately for us Jesus outlined His purpose and even used the Old Testament Scriptures to clarify it.
In the synagogue, Jesus took a scroll and read from it the following words:
"The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
(Luke 4:18-19 NIV emphasis added)
After this young Rabbi delivered the ancient prophecy from Isaiah, Jesus stopped and rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He answered their hungry stares by saying, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." (Luke 4:21) They were shocked...and we hear our Jesus declaring His purpose. Jesus came into this world to give FREEDOM! Freedom for prisoners and those who are oppressed! The Scriptures point to the truth that we are all enslaved, oppressed and not free in our natural state. So Jesus came, put on flesh and paid the price to set us free! ...he [Jesus] too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death-that is, the devil- and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.
(Hebrews 2:14-15 emphasis added)
Jesus gives us freedom to live the life that He intended. Isn't our Jesus worth worshiping because of all He has done for us!?!?!
