HOW HONOR AND WORSHIP RELATE
In Revelation 7:9-12 we see great honor given to God:
There before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice:
"Salvation belongs to our God,
who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb."
All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying:
"Amen!
Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!"
Have you ever asked yourself, "how do things become important to us?" How do we ascribe things value? Things that we value, we give them "honor" or we hold them up as valuable. Interestingly throughout the Bible, the word honor relates to two major ideas: 1) Honor when used of "things" refers to a monetary value, and 2) When used of "people" it refers to their standing/position in society. People are intrinsically valuable, but we all know that there are external/cultural forces which make it seem that for example the President of the USA is more important than a school teacher or a CEO of an organization is more important that a mailman. This is the "honor" spoken of in the Scriptures about people and it repeatedly encourages us to not seek position or "honor." But let's shift to thinking about God. How much honor should we give Him? How valuable is He? Is He of average value or supreme value? If God is of the supreme value, the question becomes what is the value/honor we give him??? Is God the one thing that you value more than anything? "But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone." (Hebrews 2:6) God deserves our worship and our honor because He is supremely valuable! If you want to hear Pastor Phil talk through this message and much more, tune in online here.
