Attention GIPC adults! Put your computer and editing skills to good use! GIPC Spire needs a new "boss" to post articles and publish our twice-a-month newsletter, The Spire. Volunteer to serve your church on your own time and work from your own computer. How convenient is that?! For more information please contact Sue Ashley at spire@gipc.org
or the Communications Committee at comm-com@gipc.org

Another Great Year for Children's Nurture!
Much appreciation goes to our dedicated Children's Nurture Commission, planners, youth and adult volunteers as GIPC children were educated, entertained, and enlightened. The children's smiles and enthusiasm were all the thanks needed!

Tips For Seniors
Great memories for pre-Boomers:       - Runamuck
Many folks over fifty feel a tinge of nostalgia at the mention of "Burma Shave." I do. Every summer, my family spent weekends at our cottage, just eighty miles from our Massachusetts home. The roads were so narrow and congested, it took four hours to complete the trip! When not counting cows, my brother and I watched for Burma Shave signs to pass the hours. Introduced in 1925 as an advertising gimmick, each of six consecutive signs, spaced a hundred paces apart, contained part of a rhyming slogan. The final sign always read, "Burma-Shave". As the signs continued to bring the Burma-Vita company success, the slogans became more and more humorous. Seeking-out those entertaining red and white signs became addictive and excitement rose, every time we spotted some. Discontinued, after the construction of the freeways, Burma-Shave signs are almost as rare as Elvis sightings. Do you remember these?
The bearded lady tried a jar...
Now she's a famous movie star.  Burma-Shave
If you think she like your bristles...
Walk barefooted through some thistles. Burma-Shave
She eyed his beard and said,
"No dice...
The wedding's off, I'll cook the     rice.  Burma-Shave
A chin where barbed wire bristles stand...
is bound to be a no Ma'ams land.

My Calling From God

Three years as a deacon have come to an end,
That's not so easy to comprehend.
What have I learned?  What have I done?
I know I've made friends with most everyone.
So now that it's over, what's next on my plate?
Should I wait for God to decide my fate?
No, I've still got plenty to say . . .

I'll never forget, what happened that day . . .
Eight years ago at age sixty nine, God reached out to me,
It took a year to realize, since He works mysteriously.
I collapsed on a treadmill and lost control and thought my life was through.
An incurable disease called Parkinson's was the start of something new.
He who knows all knew that I would never give up my beer.
And now that I was near seventy, He felt the time was now here . . .

God reached me through my late brother, Wayne.
Knowing what the outcome would be.
Knowing I had a story to tell, Wayne uttered these words to me:
"David, don't give up, you must continue,
Do not die with your music still in you".
Next came a trip to the Vietnam Wall,
That's when I gave up alcohol.

It took quite a while to understand
It was God who put that pen in my hand.
There are fifty plus thousands of names on that wall,
God's calling to me was: "remember them all."
I began writing stories, and even a book,
My efforts continued whatever it took.

Eight years have passed, I'm now seventy seven,
I've been lifted from hell and I'm halfway to heaven.
I'll continue to write and take my stand
'Til I can no longer hold a pen in my hand . . .

The printed catalogs and CD catalogs are currently unavailable. If you borrowed a catalog on CD from the Fireside Room or the Librarian's Mailbox in the church office, please return them so they can be updated. Your patience and cooperation is most appreciated! Ronald McDonald House
On Thursday, May26th, the 'kitchen help' prepared and served dinner to 17 guests and several staff members at the Ronald McDonald House at the Detroit Medical Center Campus. We enjoyed talking with the diners who are quick to express their kind appreciation of our efforts and moral support for the return to good health of their loved ones.
