Mission & Stewardship

One of the Mission & Stewardship Committee's projects is support of the AARP Tax-Aide program in the Downriver area. The Tax-Aide program provides free income tax assistance for low and moderate income clients, many of whom are senior citizens. The program is staffed by volunteers and supported by donations and grants. For the last few years, the local Tax-Aide site has been located at the 37 North Church in Southgate. M&S donates funds to the 37 North Church to help defray expenses incurred in housing the program, such as facility use and maintenance and increased utility bills.
This year, 13 GIPCers were among the 33 volunteers who assisted clients with preparing and filing tax returns. Some are facilitators who set up appointments by phone, check in clients at their appointed times, verify IDs and arrange paperwork for the preparers. The preparers (or counselors) sit with the clients, talk with and interview them, and make the computer entries required to complete the returns. Every return is quality reviewed by a second counselor, or checker. The checker's responsibility is to confirm that each return is complete and accurate before it is electronically filed with the IRS and the State of Michigan. All volunteers are trained, tested, and certified according to IRS guidelines before they are allowed to work with clients. Volunteers must follow the rules and standards of conduct established by the IRS. Last year, an IRS inspector visited our site . . . scary at the time perhaps, but we passed with flying colors!
In her summary of this year's tax season, the Local Coordinator of our Tax-Aide group, Karin Dean Kraft wrote:  "It's been a terrific tax season for our office. Many thanks to all of you for being such a TEAM . . . .  And we've all heard from our clients how appreciative they are of our service as well as for the kind and helpful way we treat them."
Nearly 1300 returns were filed during this tax season. Our clients received over $700,000 in refunds and credits. Most of our clients are quick to express their heartfelt thanks. As a facilitator for a few years, I have experienced the angst of those who would rather be doing anything but taxes; have worked with clients whose understanding of English is limited; those who cannot see or hear well or need assistance in moving around as well as some who need to use our personal cell phones to call for rides home. We often hear about life experiences, along with anecdotes, jokes, and general discussions on many topics. It seems that we touch on all walks of life as we thread our way through the tax season. In the end though, it is most gratifying to realize that maybe we have done one little thing to help make another's experience meaningful and pleasant just because of the few moments we shared together.
Many thanks to Karin Kraft and Kathleen Rankin for providing information and assistance.

p.s. In case you're wondering, 37 North Church, a Wesleyan Congregation, is so named because of its ready access to and from Interstate 75 via Exit 37 North  . . . (I know, I had to ask too!) Their Pastor Joy is a delight to know!

Tips For Seniors

Don't let aging get you down--it's too difficult to get up again!                                           - Anonymous
Americans, young and old, have a shared love affair with automobiles because of the freedom and mobility they offer but, when older folks are no longer able to drive, there is a serious risk for isolation to develop. Unwilling to be dependent on others, the very activities that have made their lives meaningful are suddenly curtailed. They are no longer able to socialize with friends and family, attend church, shop, participate in community events or meet their physical needs. There are a hundreds of retirement communities across our nation, designed specifically to meet the needs of senior citizens but 80% of older adults live in suburban and rural areas such as Grosse Ile where the two critical options necessary for aging in place are either limited or unavailable. These are adequate public transportation and having essential destinations located within walking distance of home. According to The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging, by the year 2030, twenty five percent of this country's licensed drivers will be over the age of 65. Here are ways communities like ours can accommodate an aging population better:
* Help seniors to continue driving safely longer by issuing graduated driving licenses,  tailored to their abilities
* Modify roadways, signage and vehicles to enable partially impaired drivers
* Add more sidewalks and provide frequent resting places
* Improve the quality and variety of public transportation
* Recruit volunteer drivers to provide both on-demand and point-to-point transport
* Engage older citizens in a planning process to enhance civic life and lay the groundwork for more successful solutions.                                   - Chief Runamuck

York Connection and the Inter-Faith Council encourage all adults to attend the last session of free programs presented by the HOPE Dementia Ministry LLC. A spiral-bound information booklet containing information covered during the presentation is available for $5.

Islandfest Parade

GIPC is once again participating in the Islandfest Parade on May 21st at 10 am. We need a few adults and children to ride in the Noah's Ark float and ring bells as well as walkers to accompany the float carrying signs and passing out goodies to the children watching the parade. This is always a fun time and a great way to show God's fellowship and love to others. We have bright green t-shirts for you to wear too. If interested, please contact Diane Flynn at dflynn248@gmail.com Hope you can join us!

Help us to make our church look its Sunday best! PLEASE consider adopting one of the few plots that are still available for care. Plots need to be weeded a couple times a month, it usually just takes about 10 to 20 minutes to keep everything looking good. Check out the Adopt A Plot poster at the Crossroads or contact Leigh Krauss. Adopt with a buddy!

Diaper Bank
Monday, May 9th, was a busy one at GIPC. (Please see photos at left of page.) Nine "bundlers" met in the Fireside Room to re-package diapers for Fish and Loaves. Between the ones delivered to GIPC and those sent directly to Fish and Loaves, we bundled 7,349 diapers, bringing our grand total to 30,454 diapers! Distributed in monthly packages of 60, this allows parents to place their babies in free or subsidized daycare while they go to work. Thank you for your donations and keep them coming!

Mary/Martha Circle to Help Three Good Causes
When the members of the Mary/Martha Circle saw that their treasury added up to $768.91, they decided to share at least $300 with causes that are looking for funding.  Although GIPC doesn't have an active Presbyterian Women's organization associated with the PW of the Presbytery of Detroit, our liaison with PWPD, Pam Frucci has been actively involved, serves as chair of their Justice & Peace Committee and regularly attends their Coordinating Team meetings and gatherings.  It was decided to send a check for $100 to the PWPD operating treasury.  Following up on an appeal by Toni Mann, who led the Mary/Martha Circle Bible study which focuses on water, the members decided to send a $100 check to Living Water of the World.  Toni, Steve Benton, and Gene Swift all attended a training session by that organization and our church is supporting Living Water financially.  A third $100 check will be sent to the Heifer International to provide livestock for families in developing countries.
When Mary/Martha Circle begins their new Bible study in September on "Who Is Jesus?  What a Difference a Lens Makes", long time leader Judi Treadwell will step aside and Linda Washburn will take over. The Bible study cost for the book is $8 and they can be ordered by May 18.    Mary/Martha Circle meets the third Tuesday every month from September to May and a different leader, usually a GIPC staff member, covers the monthly lesson. The circle meets in the Fireside Room at noon and members bring a sandwich. Coffee and tea are provided. Women interested in fellowship and Bible study are invited to join the  Mary/Martha Circle.
The final lesson of the current Bible study: "Come to the Waters" will be led by Rev. Jim Conley at noon on Tuesday, May 17th.  Lesson eight features "The Hospitality of Living Water---Compassion."the most interest for your readers.

PWPD
The women of the South Lyon Presbyterian Church hosted the PWPD on May 7th with gracious hosting and the best lunch ever prepared for a gathering. It was my first time in South Lyon and I was impressed by the charm of the small town. It has a quaint main street and a bustling farmers' market downtown.
The Fruccis hosted Judy Oeder, moderator of Presbyterian Women in the Synod of the Covenant, on Friday night before the gathering. Before she made the long drive back to Columbus to teach Sunday school on Sunday morning, I gave Judy a tour of the Island. She was impressed with being able to look over to Canada, the many fine and historic homes, but was most impressed by St. James Chapel and the Tiffany window.  She took many photos of the angel in the window. (Luckily there was a bustling crew of church members cleaning up after their rummage sale that weekend.)
Our own Grace Iglehart gave the devotions at the May 7th gathering and went over well with her message. The only low point of the morning was installing officers for PWPD for 2016-7. There are many openings for women to serve but few who have stepped up. They're looking for a vice-moderator to take over for Joan Lockard who has served two terms. Also open is vice-moderator of Mission and Studies and Spiritual Development, as well as a gatherings coordinator, and a search moderator.

Pentecost Offering
Pentecost Sunday is May 15, when we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit as a bringer of new life. With the Spirit's coming, we no longer need to settle for business as usual, but can know the amazing love of God that makes important needs attainable.
The Pentecost Offering, which we are collecting in the month of May, is one of the four Special Offerings of the Presbyterian church (U.S.A.). When you give to the Pentecost Offering you help to bring forth God's transforming, redeeming love to youth and children at risk in the name of Jesus Christ.
Forty percent of the offering received at GIPC stays within the direction of our own church to support local ministries and agencies that help youth and children at risk. This year the Mission and Stewardship Committee will recommend to the Session that the amount retained be sent to the local area Taylor Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force. The remainder of the Pentecost Offering is sent to the Presbyterian Mission Agency to support other programs that involve children, youth and young adults, such as the Young Adult Volunteer Program (YAV) in which Brad Rito of GIPC is serving this year.
Special offering envelopes may be found in the pew racks in the sanctuary. Please give generously. Thank you for your support.   - Mission & Stewardship Committee
