2016 Theologian in Residence

One of the bright spots of winter is right around the corner: GIPC's 2016 Theologian in Residence program. Mark your calendars for March 4-6 and be prepared to be entertained, energized and spiritually challenged.
Our theologian is Dr. Rodger Nishioka, whose focus for the weekend will be "21st Century Reformation: Exploring Together What is Challenging and Changing Our Church Today."  Dr. Nishioka, a compelling public speaker, is an Associate Professor of Christian Ed at Columbia Theological Seminary.   He has done extensive research on non-affiliated young adults (the 'Nones' we read about).
The weekend will begin at 6:30 pm Friday evening with desserts in the Fellowship Hall.  Dr. Nishioka will speak from 7:00 - 9:00 pm.  On Saturday morning, we'll welcome you with a Continental breakfast at 8:30 am and the program will begin at 9:00 am, running until noon.
Sunday morning Dr. Nishioka will preach at both services and be available for informal conversation during Ed Hour in the Fireside Room.
This is an excellent opportunity for you to gain a better understanding of where the church is headed and how it is reaching out to the youth who will be its future. There is a sign-up sheet at the Crossroads; we urge you to sign up and not miss out on the words of a man whose life's work is enriching the church.

Tips For Seniors

For many, the making of funeral arrangements will become a daunting task:
Being well-informed is the best way to avoid fraud. You can avoid being pressured into making purchases, signing contracts, or committing funds, at a time when you are most vulnerable by following these tips:
*Call for quotes, before you make a purchase. Funeral homes are required to provide detailed price lists, either over the phone or in writing.
*Take a friend with you to offer perspective and help you make difficult decisions.
*Know that embalming rules are governed by state law and is not legally required for direct cremations. Many funeral homes offer rental caskets as an environmentally friendly option.
*Determine the difference between basic fees charged for professional services and the fees charged for optional, added services.
*Read contracts and purchase agreements before signing them to confirm all your requirements are met.
*Understand the contract cancellation and refund terms, as well as portability options for transferring your contract to another funeral home.
*If prepaying for funeral arrangements, make every effort to be well informed beforehand.
*Always share your specific wishes with the persons closest to you.                                          - Chief Runamuck

Presbyterian Older Adult Ministry Network

Presbyterian Older Adult Ministry Network (POAMN) is the result of the vision of a few folks over 30 years ago, in the PCUSA, who took seriously the forecasted demographics of our constituency. POAMN continues today as a 501c3 organization (gifts are tax deductible) continuing to serve the mission of older adult ministry.
Yesterday older adult ministry focused on those who were becoming the new older adult's...today older adult ministry is focused on all of the generations...as all ages are dependent upon one another. The awareness that if we lived long enough we would become one of those we were trying to help and now some of us are living out the ministry we had the 'vision' about.
Through the years a great number of resources have been produced addressing the various issues having to do with older adult ministry. The Office on Aging, under which POAMN operated, closed in 2004 when the then General Assembly Council reorganized itself. The assumption of a number of folks was the reality of the demographic which showed the constituency was 'aging'. POAMN appears to have been the thread that has continued to be addressing this mission.
POAMN has a 'relationship' with the PCUSA through our Church Growth area. Thanks to an overture action of the General Assembly...POAMN is to be connected to someone somewhere in our structure whatever form it takes. The 'relationship' doesn't involve receiving income....we are truly dependent upon memberships and gifts of those who appreciate and see older adult ministry as a mission.
POAMN is a network of people interested in older adult ministry and is attracting an interest of ecumenical organizations,  professionals and volunteers who are involved with older adult ministry in various ways.
The Planning Guide is a resource POAMN has produced annually (since early 2000) for a number of years and 2016 is currently on line... www.poamn.org

Thanks to our partnership with Presbyterian Association of Homes & Services to the Aging (PAHSA) and their financial commitment we will continue to produce the annual Planning Guide through 2020!
The Planning Guide is a wonderful resource and welcomes suggestions and  sharing of resources to help further older adult ministry efforts. This new generation of older folks... is new territory. When we add the advances in technology, in medicine and the many changes....life is very different than many of us imagined as were growing up. Change is a constant and while difficult at times to grasp what is happening....we do know we are not the only ones experiencing both frustration and joy!
The POAMN site www.poamn.org also has the POAMN Network News (PNN)...the quarterly online newsletter contains a great number of useful articles and also reports out what takes place as our annual fall conference. Membership of $50 annually benefits the mission of older adult ministry; discount on Conference registration and a free hard copy of the annual planning guide. Leadership of POAMN is made up of volunteers committed to older adult ministry.

February 28th is Diaper Sunday

While Diaper Sunday is not as wildly popular as Super Bowl Sunday, it does provide much-needed diapers to qualified, low-income families.  Even if your favorite team didn't win on January 7th, you can still be a winner by donating disposable diapers on February 28th.  So...go team and drop off diapers at the "Bottoms Up" Diaper Bank display.  Click here to read the full article that appeared in the January 21st issue the Downriver News-Herald.
The fourth Sunday of each month is the official diaper bank collection day, but diapers can be dropped off anytime by the "Bottoms Up" sign. Don't feel like lugging diapers to church?  They can be mailed to the following address:  Fish & Loaves, 25670 Northline Rd., Taylor, MI 48180.  Checks can also be made out to GIPC with a notation to "Bottoms Up".
A container for diaper coupons is located at the Cross Roads. Please feel free to donate diaper coupons or take one to save money on a purchase you plan to make.
