Our December Christmas Joy Offering provides assistance for those who have dedicated their lives to the service of the church and supports leadership development and education at Presbyterian-related racial ethnic schools and colleges.  Follow the tradition of the wise men, and give this Advent season.  Special Joy Offering envelopes may be found in the pew racks in our sanctuary.

"Bottoms Up"

A major congratulations is in order for GIPC's first collection of disposable diapers to the "Bottoms Up" Diaper Bank. We collected 1,112 diapers on November 29th! Twenty diapers are distributed to each qualified low-income family with babies and toddlers. When diapers were delivered to Fish and Loaves, Karen Salomone, their director, said that they will be gone within a week. Qualifying families can  go to Fish and Loaves only every other month for food and other items such as diapers. It would be wonderful to be able to provide diapers for each family during the eight-week time frame before they can shop again. Karen thanked all of you for your generosity and mentioned how appreciative the families will be to have diapers available.
Please mark your calendar for the next "Bottoms Up" collection scheduled for Sunday, December 27th. Diapers may be dropped off at the Pack 'n Play at the Crossroads, or mailed directly to Fish & Loaves, 25670 Northline Rd., Taylor, MI 48180. If you wish to contribute money towards the purchase of diapers, write a check to Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church and write "Bottoms Up" on the memo line. We are also interested in companies that would like to become corporate sponsors.

Christmas Cards For Recovering Vets
Please accept sincere apologies for the error in the December 1st Spire regarding Christmas Cards for recovering vets at Walter Reed Hospital. That program has been discontinued. The Mission and Stewardship Committee will be delivering cards to the Detroit Veterans Hospital. Please come to fellowship hall after both services the next two Sundays to sign cards!

Tips For Seniors
Beyond Home for the Holidays:
Christmastime is an especially lonely time an elderly person confined to a nursing home.  A visit, during this season, can do wonders to redirect the inward focus of shut-ins, many of whom struggle with depression. Determine what your schedule will allow and consider dedicating a few hours visiting this often overlooked population of our society. Your precious time, given from a heart full of compassion and care, may be all it takes to lift the spirits of a nursing home resident. Here are suggestions of things you might consider doing with them:
* Present a Christmas program, singing Christmas carols and encouraging them to join-in.
* Wheel them down to the Christmas program to help free-up the nursing home staff.
* With the consent of staff, distribute small trinkets and/or sweet treats.
* Listen to their stories, while making eye contact to demonstrate you are genuinely interested and you care.
* Decorate their rooms with Christmas stockings or wreaths to brighten their days.
* Distribute personalized Christmas cards with their names written upon the envelopes.
* Share a meal with them: your time alone will be regarded as a special gift.
* Read aloud or play simple games with them to distract them from their mundane existence.
* Nothing demonstrates more that you care than a sincere hug.                                             - Dr. Runamuck

Programs are presented by the HOPE Dementia Ministry LLC, bringing light to the darkness for those living with dementia and their care partners through education. Each presentation is free; a spiral-bound information booklet containing information covered during the presentation is available for a donation of $5.
Program #5
Making Sense of Dementia
Our brain controls all our senses; dementia changes our 5 senses; these changes diminish communication; learn how to stimulate those resilient senses.

Women's Retreat

Adult Nurture encourages you to sign up now for the 2016 Women's Retreat, January 22-23 at Weber's Inn in Ann Arbor. Our speaker this year will be the Rev. Fran Hayes from Dearborn's Littlefield Presbyterian Church; she will talk about "What is the World Like When God's Will is Done?"
Weber's Inn is a meeting location we go back to again and again; the rooms are lovely, the food is very good and management works hard to meet our every need. Rooms are available as singles ($150), doubles ($105) or triples ($90); attendees can either select their own roommates in advance or be assigned one. As always, confidential scholarships are available if needed; talk to Jan Holmes. And we will once again have a hospitality suite where we can gather following Friday evening's program to simply kick back and enjoy each other's company.
One of our Women's Retreat traditions is Prayer Partners: we pick the name of a woman we will, confidentially, keep in special prayer throughout the year. It's time now to send a note to your prayer partner from last year's retreat, identifying yourself as her prayer partner and letting her know she's been watched over. It is a very fulfilling role for both the giver and the recipient.
Sign-up sheets are at the Crossroads on Sundays. An Adult Nurture reprecentative is there to answer your questions and take your checks. We hope very much that you will be part of what promises to be a time of spiritual growth and congregational fellowship.

"Using our Connection to God to Strengthen Ties to Family, Friends and our World"
Pastor Sean Ewbank will examine our various connections in these rapidly changing times. He will describe our vertical connection with God and how to use this to forge stronger horizontal ties with family, friends and our world. He will use personal stories to talk about our faith which binds us all together. We will also hear about current technology that can facilitate our connections if we avoid the pitfalls of the same technology that can also disconnect us from each other.
Pastor Sean began his Grosse Ile ministry at St. Thomas Lutheran in 2010. He is originally from California and graduated from high school in Trenton, Michigan.  He received his bachelor's degree from Valparaiso University and his Master of Divinity from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. Men's retreat speaker
Over his career he has served as pastor of congregations in Warren Michigan, Philadelphia Pennsylvania, University of Southern California, and Mandeville Louisiana. Pastor Sean lives on Grosse Ile with his wife, Krista, and their daughter Abby.
Sign up at the crossroads. Retreat cost per person (including room and two meals) - Doubles $105, Singles $150.
