Mission Activities

This year when you send your Christmas cards, write out one more and send it to a Recovering American Soldier and let them know you are thinking of them:
 Recovering American Soldier
c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center
 6900 Georgia Ave NW
Washington D.C. 20307-5001. Or you can come to Fellowship Hall where the Mission Committee will have Christmas cards ready for you after both services on December 6th, 13th, and 20th.

Knitters: Come and join us on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month to knit blankets for those undergoing chemotherapy at Karmanos. The fellowship is great, and even if you are a beginner or do not know how to knit, there are experienced knitters who are more than willing to help you. We meet in the Fireside Room, and our next meeting is December 10th from 3 to 4:30 pm. Any questions, please call Kathy Benton at 734-675-3199.

     Thanks to
Gus Skaggs, Bill Carver, Ethel Carver, Jack Richardson, Sang Im Richardson and Kathy Benton who prepared and served brunch at Ronald McDonald House on November 21st. Those interested in serving brunch on December 19th, may sign up at the Crossroads or contact Kathy Benton at 734 675-3199.

Tips For Seniors
The day after Thanksgiving, when it appeared possible the day might reassume an air of normalcy, I was suddenly tasked with the chore of taking down the harvest home themed decorations and returning them to the attic. To save effort, my wife suggested I bring down the numerous red and green bins containing Christmas decorations for the approaching Advent season. Old Scrooge that I am, this mundane and dreaded, annual ritual is one that I would prefer to relegate to a nimble, teenager. This years' near disaster confirmed my apprehensions, leaving an indelible imprint of things best avoided upon my aging brain. It was going pretty well until my second descent from the attic when, laden with boxes and unable to find my footing, I slipped and missed the last step, entirely. I was extremely fortunate in that I landed squarely on my butt and, though stunned and somewhat bruised, I was not seriously hurt. Upon hearing the crash, my wife yelled, "What was that thump?"
Still recovering, it was a few moments before I shouted back, "I just fell down the blankety-blank stairs!"
"Is anything broken?" she asked.  "No, I guess I'm ok."
After a slight pause, she responded, "I meant the ornaments."                                   - Chief Runamuck

December Friday Flix: Welcome Advent with the classic movie "It's a Wonderful Life" on Friday, December 4th at 2 pm. in the Fireside Room. As always, enjoy the free popcorn.

The "Lunch Ladies" have changed their venue.
Sharkey's is closing so we are moving to Lloyd's beginning next Thursday, December 3rd at noon. All women are invited to join us for lunch and conversation. We have no agenda - just lunch with old and new church friends.

Christmas Joy Offering
joystar
During the month of December GIPC receives the Christmas Joy Offering from its generous congregation. Gifts to the Christmas Joy Offering are divided between the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church, USA and Presbyterian Racial Ethnic Schools and Colleges. Read of specific instances of people who receive assistance from this offering in the inserts in your church bulletins. Special Joy Offering envelopes may be found in the pew racks in our sanctuary.
"Bottoms Up"

Baby and toddler disposable diapers can be dropped off in the Pack'n'Play area near the Crossroads. A check may be made out to the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church with the notation "Bottoms Up." Diapers may also be sent directly to:
Fish and Loaves
25670 Northline Rd.
Taylor, MI 48180
If you choose to mail diapers directly to Fish and Loaves, keep your receipts. Fish and Loaves will provide confirmation of your donation in January 2016.
Diapers will be distributed to qualified, low-income families with babies and toddlers. Our goal is to provide enough diapers so parents are able to take their children to daycare. By doing that, parents can go to work and provide for their families.

Coats For Kids

Continuing through December 6th, "Coats for Kids" are being collected at the Crossroads. The campaign includes Hoover Elementary School in Lincoln Park in addition to Harms Elementary School in Southwest Detroit. Please contact Grace Iglehart for more information.

Adult Nurture

Sunday Morning Ed. Hour series "The Gospel and Downton Abbey" continues through December 20th. The popular series portrays the deep and broad social changes that swept England over the course of the early 20th century. The roles of the gentry, of women, of the service class - the basic structure of the English world - were upended and reshaped.
The class will explore both those societal rearrangements and the way in which they affected and were affected by faith and organized religion. An additional side benefit: You'll approach the series' final season more knowledgeably.

It is time to sign up for two Adult Nurture kick-off events of the new calendar year: the 2016 Women's and Men's Retreats.
The Women's Retreat is January 22-23, 2016, at Weber's Inn in Ann Arbor. Guest speaker for the women this year is the  Rev. Fran Hayes from Littlefield Presbyterian Church in Dearborn.  Rev. Hayes will talk about "What Is the World Like When God's Will is Done?"
The Men's Retreat is February 5-6, 2016, also at Weber's Inn. The Rev. Sean Ewbank, pastor of St. Thomas Lutheran Church of Grosse Ile, will be the speaker.
Sign-up sheets are at the Crossroads. There will be an Adult Nurture representative on Sunday mornings to answer your questions

Mary/Martha Circle

For the year 2015-16, Mary/Martha Circle is doing the Bible study: "Come to the Waters." Monthly study leaders since September have been Anita Teresko, Jan Holmes, and Grace Inglehart. Pam Frucci will lead the group on Tuesday, December 15th for Lesson 4: "Dangerous Waters---God's Deliverance".  Pam will also share the trip to Italy she and Jack took last May. Called the "Best of Italy" and organized by Trafalgar Tours, Pam said the stop they made in Assisi was the best part of the tour. You are invited to come and bring your lunch. Coffee and tea are available and members will be bringing Christmas cookies for everyone.
All GIPCers may donate Campbell Soup labels and box tops. Place them in the "Soup Can" canister in the GIPC kitchen to be given to the Grosse Ile elementary schools to purchase  needed equipment.

PWPD

The annual Christmas program celebrated by the Presbyterian Women of the Presbytery of Detroit (PWPD) will be at the Cherry Hill Presbyterian Church in Dearborn on Wednesday, December 2nd from 9:45 am. through lunch. Reservations must be called in to Sherry Brown at (313) 561-6787. Pam Frucci will be driving and has room for passengers.

INGATHERING SERVES LOCAL AGENCIES, OVERSEAS AND MORE
The total amount collected in donations and sewing projects equaled $46,378.29 at the annual Ingathering on Oct. 19-21 at Westminster Church organized by co-chairs Emily Nietering and Sherry Brown. A project of the Mission Committee of the PWPD, a portion of the collection was sent overseas ($2,471.82,) the largest amount was sent to local agencies ($37,982.48,) and a third portion was given to the PWPD mission in Detroit Second Mile Center ($5,923.99.) 39 churches participated in the Ingathering along with 42 volunteers.
Women from our church who would like to meet to sew quilts for wheel chair patients or children's quilts and pajamas, should contact Elaine Richardson. She would be happy to help volunteers. Contact Pam Frucci for more information.
