ChristNet Warming Center

Through coordination with the Inter-Faith Council of Churches, our Grosse Ile churches along with St. Cyprian's in Riverview, will again be participating in the ChristNet Warming Center program. Beginning Sunday, November 16 through Sunday, November 23, GIPC will be the host site for the week long program. Our evening to prepare and serve dinner is Wednesday, November 19 and we hope you will able to join us to make the evening a special one for our guests.
Volunteers will be needed on Wednesday, November 19  to:

  • Prepare and serve dinner
  • Staff three 4½ hour shifts: 7:15 pm to 11:45 pm; 11:30 pm to 4 am; 3:30 am to 8 am

   Crews will be needed for:

  • Setting up on Sunday, November 16 - Time to be determined
  • Wash towels on Thursday morning after our guests leave at 6:30 am
  • Tearing down on Sunday, November 23 (approximately 6:30 am)
  • Wash bedding & towels on Sunday, November 23 at a laundromat at approximately 7 am

Look for sign up sheets at the crossroads or call Jo-Anne Gronlund at 676-0046 to volunteer to staff one of the shifts on Wednesday or Sandy Bettinger at 671-6457 to volunteer food for the evening meal.
We will have a box near the Crossroads to collect travel sizes of shampoo, soap, deodorant, razors and shaving cream. Warm clothing, boots and duffel bags are greatly appreciated. We will set up an area for collection of clothing after November 1; please be sure to note that it is for ChristNet.

Christ calls us to love one-another and keep the Commandments and in Matthew 19:21, He advises a young man seeking the kingdom to "Go, sell all your possessions and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven."

Yours in Christ,

Tips For Seniors

A young man ducked into a confessional with a turkey in his arms pleading, "Forgive me Father, for I have sinned. I was so desperate to provide for my family, I stole this turkey. Will you take it from me and ease my guilt?"
"Certainly not," said the Priest.  "You must return it to its rightful owner."
"But Father, I tried to return it and he refused. What should I do?"
"If what you say is true, then you may keep the turkey, but you must say ten Hail Marys and ten Our Fathers."
The young man thanked the Priest profusely and scurried off, taking the turkey with him.
After confession, the Priest returned to the rectory and, upon entering his kitchen, discovered someone had stolen his turkey.

Presbyterian Older Adult Ministry

Our church is a member of POAMN via the York Connection. POAMN is also known as the Presbyterian Older Adult Ministry Network, a network of persons engaged in ministry with older adults. These people work in presbyteries, synods, are leaders in congregations, serve in specialized ministries such as chaplains in care facilities and staff involved in older adult ministries.
POAMN was related to our PCUSA Office on Aging until it was closed in 2004. Currently we are related to the Program Mission Agency through the Office on Church Growth with a partnership agreement.
POAMN's purpose is to equip and assist in developing older adult ministries throughout the church, to produce leader training through conferences and material resources.  Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church has had representatives to the last four annual conferences: Ilona Macek (San Antonio, TX); Jan Holmes (Portland, OR); Debby & Mike Reynolds (Atlanta, GA); Lynne & Gene Swift (Excelsior Springs, MO). I was delighted to have representation from our church. I have been a part of POAMN since its beginnings that began in 1982.
Feel free to visit www.poamn.org and see what took place in Missouri and ask Gene to share his "Coney Boys" story and how it "paid off."
Enjoy the read...there are some great past issues as well!

Coffee House for Sr. Highs & Middlers
This year we are trying something new called Coffee House. Every Sunday morning before Ed Hour we will serve coffee, tea, donuts, juice, etc. in the Sr. High Lounge for both Middlers and Sr. Highs. During that time we'll do joys and concerns as well as talk about what has happened in the world over the past week. This gives us just a little more time for youth to catch up with what all has happened over the week and to get a jolt of caffeine and sugar before Ed Hour begins.
Get Behind Our Diaper Drive

Children's Nurture and the children of the church are having a diaper drive this fall from now through Thanksgiving.  We are collecting packages of children's disposable diapers, any kind and size, to give to Fish and Loaves, our mission project for this year. The need is great so any help you can be will be greatly appreciated. Leave your donations at the Crossroad.
Presbyterian Women (PWPD)

Here's a chance to visit Second Mile Center in Detroit.

The Wednesday, November 5 gathering of the Presbyterian Women of the Presbytery of Detroit will be held at Second Mile Center, the PWPD mission on Morang in Detroit. Operating as a neighborhood center since 2006, it serves a rough area of Detroit by providing a safe place for children to learn Bible lessons, mime, songs, and dances, get help with the homework and have a good meal. Whole families are invited for dinner on Mondays. The November gathering focuses on domestic violence, one of the top concerns among PWPD members. After a hymn sing from 9:45-10 am. and a business meeting, the attendees will witness a playlet on human trafficking written by Nancy Kammer-Wildern, an actress and member of the Justice & Peace Committee which is in charge of the program. (She was featured at the Performance Network Theatre in Ann Arbor playing in Driving Miss Daisy.) Following the playlet, a panel made up of four people, who work in the field addressing domestic violence, will speak on the topic: "What it takes to STOP Violence against Women."
After a Q & A session, lunch will be served. Reservations may be made by October 31 by either calling (313) 245-5252 or the preferred way by email: secondmileliving@sbcglobal.net
As chair of the Justice & Peace Committee, Pam Frucci is very involved in this gathering and has offered to drive anyone in our church interested in attending.
Due to a nationwide effort to call attention to domestic violence, there is a call to wear orange on the 25th of every month. Pam Frucci can order orange T-shirts with the PW logo and the words: "STOP violence against women." The shirt cost $11. Women have been asked to wear their orange shirts at the November 5th gathering.
