Go And Serve Sunday

On Sunday, October 5th, World Communion Sunday, you are invited to a very special 10:30 worship experience. In keeping with our theme, "The Church Has Left the Building," we will have the opportunity to physically leave the building to serve the island community. After a brief opening in the sanctuary, we will send ourselves to various locations to serve by picking up trash and litter. Those unable to serve this way may join others in the Fellowship Hall to assemble health kits and soup mixes for families of those in Southwest Detroit who are tutored by members in our congregation. We will return to the church for communion at 11:45. Also fellowship continues with the opportunity to purchase pizza in Fellowship Hall with proceeds benefiting our Youth Mission.
Please join us for this very special Sunday.
Associate for Youth and Young Adults

The Session voted to create a new staff position at GIPC - Associate for Youth and Young Adults. This is a full-time, salaried, non-ordained, professional position (that began) on September 1, 2014. The focus of this position is to minister to youth and their families and to explore a ministry to young adults, college-age and people in their twenties.
The Personnel Committee put forth a candidate for this new position. On behalf of the Personnel Committee and the Session, I am delighted to announce that Session has called Grace Iglehart to become Associate for Youth and Young Adults. After serving as Youth Director at Northbrook Presbyterian Church in Beverly Hills, Michigan, and for the last year and half as Youth Coordinator here at Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church, Grace is uniquely qualified to continue her outstanding work among us.
Please join me in welcoming Grace Iglehart to her new position here at GIPC. Grace brings energy, excitement, dedication, commitment and love to her ministry. She intends to make youth ministry and Christian Education her life-long career.

Welcome, Grace!

Faithfully,
   Philip J. Reed

Peacemaking Offering

We at GIPC are currently receiving the annual Peacemaking Offering. Giving to the Presbyterian Church (USA) Peacemaking Offering allows our congregation to join other Presbyterians in making an impact in local, national and international peacemaking efforts. Funding received enables the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program to address issues of violence and oppression based upon age, gender and race and to work to prevent and eradicate such atrocities; to address illiteracy and poverty through outreach and community development; to train leaders to become peace builders through teaching conflict resolution and reconciliation in regions of conflict. Twenty-five percent of the offering received at GIPC will be directed to a program considered of special interest by our own Mission and Stewardship Committee.
Please consider thoughtfully your commitment to give witness to God's gift of peace through your offering. Special offering envelopes may be found in the pew racks in the Sanctuary now and through October 12.

Thursday Knitting Group

We will resume our regular get togethers on October 9th from 3:00 to 4:30 pm. in the Fireside Room. Our meetings will be the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Last year we made over 20 blankets for patients going through chemo at Karmanos and also purple hats for newborn infants to remind parents of the shaken baby syndrome. We are open to other suggestions for new projects this year.
For new knitters we have lots of experienced helpers, and if you don't know how to knit, we will teach you. If you have any questions please call Vicki DesJardins or Kathy Benton.

CASS COMMUNITY SOCIAL SERVICES SELLS MATS AND DETROIT TREADS
Perhaps you read Mitch Albom's column in the Sept. 21 Free Press when he interviewed the Rev. Faith Fowler, pastor and the energy behind the Cass Community Social Services. She's a Methodist minister who is the driving force behind getting the homeless and jobless off the streets of Detroit by rescuing junk tires from vacant lots and skillfully turning them into colorful door mats and a new item: Detroit Treads. They're fancy flip flops that sell for $25 all around the country.
Mitch captures Faith's compassion and personality in his column. Contact Pam Frucci for flyers with information on how to order mats and treads from Cass Community Social Services. They would make not only a different kind of Christmas gift but help Cass Community Services in their good work in Detroit.

PWPD MEETINGS

The September 10 meeting of the Presbyterian Women of the Presbytery of Detroit was a cluster meeting at Southfield Covenant Church. (Clusters are groups of churches in the same locale.) The charismatic speaker Renee Warman sang several songs and spoke on radical hospitality.  She shared several handouts including scripture passages on hospitality, "beauty" tips on being a more beautiful person, and this short quote from Edward Everett Hale: "I am only one, but I still am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do."  Please contact Pam Frucci for copies of her handouts.

The first gathering of Presbyterian Women of the Presbytery of Detroit on October 1st will be held at Jefferson Ave. Presbyterian Church located on E. Jefferson near the entrance to Belle Isle. A missionary who serves the Roma people, a disenfranchised population in Eastern Europe, will be the speaker.
The November gathering is at Second Mile Center, the mission of PWPD that provides a sanctuary in one of the poorest areas in Detroit for children and their families. Under the direction of Ruth Azar, Second Mile Center brings the children off the streets for Bible study, learning dance and mime, sign language, and tutors them. The center also has meals for whole families and every year sponsors a Health Fair. The program on Wednesday, November 5th, will be on STOP Violence Against Women with a panel discussion following a short playlet on human trafficking. (Domestic violence and human trafficking are two of the top concerns when the Presbyterian Women of Detroit were polled last fall.) Lunch will be served following the program. If you would like a ride to this meeting, please contact Pam Frucci.
