Sending Sunday ~
Christian Nurture at GIPC
A lot more than Education, Christian "Nurture" strives to teach the love of Jesus Christ through our actions, our acceptance of differences, our interest and care for the entire person. Those who serve in our church's nurturing opportunities dedicate a portion of time each week to study and to be present in the lives of our congregants. They not only teach and instruct but endeavor to foster faith and Christ-like behavior.
All of us at GIPC are grateful for your dedication and talents and we pray that you may be granted the courage and strength to share God's good news and love to those in our church's programs and events.

Tips For Seniors

 Dealing with aging parents...
Watching parents grow older can be an emotional roller
coaster. Being a care taker for the same persons who took
care of you, as a child can be difficult. As roles reverse, you
gradually find yourself becoming the decision maker.
Understanding your parent's frame of reference (their past &
culture) will help you to identify their belief system and
explain their actions. It will also serve to boost your patience and compassion, helping you to avoid conflicts and
disagreements. Taking older parents' complaints seriously can assist you in discovering their real issues, so listen carefully to determine the root cause of their displeasure.
Be familiar with your parents' physician, especially when
Mom or Dad are beginning to show signs of dementia. By
accompanying them to a doctor's appointment, you can
observe how they interact with their doctor. Tell him/her
about any changes you have observed, such as loss of
appetite, sadness, fearfulness, etc.
Lastly, speak with your parents about making you, or
someone they trust, their power of attorney for both their
financial and medical decisions. Express the importance of
filling-out advanced directives for end of life. Remember,
though: pushing older parents into signing things they are
uncomfortable with is unwise. Instead, urge them to consider directives that will allow others to make decisions for them,
when they become unable to do so. Be ever patient and
loving when dealing with older parents. This may be difficult
to do, at times, but realizing you may be in their shoes, one
day, often serves as a helpful reminder.

Game Day

Come play a friendly game of euchre, bridge or dominoes every Wednesday starting at 2:00 pm in Fellowship Hall. All adults welcome.

We Are Leaving The Building . . .

On October 5th, World Communion Sunday, you are invited to a very special 10:30 worship experience.  In keeping with our theme this year "The Church Has Left the Building", we will have the opportunity to physically leave the building to serve the island community as part of our worship that morning.  After a brief opening and call to worship in the sanctuary, we will send ourselves to various locations on the island to serve by picking up trash and litter.

For those who are unable to go out for this activity, you will be offered the opportunity to go to fellowship hall and assemble meals for the families of students in Southwest Detroit who are tutored by members of our congregation.  October 6th is the first day for our tutors to meet with their students and we will send them with food for the students to take home for their families that evening.

The Schedule for October 5th worship services:
*8:15 - Traditional worship service
*10:30 - Call to worship and opening in the sanctuary
*10:45 - Congregation go to locations on the island for clean-up or to fellowship hall for meal assembly.  Wear comfortable clothes and for those going out to pick up litter, please bring gloves
*11:30-11:45 - return to church and have communion together in the sanctuary.

The Youth will have their monthly pizza sale on that day with donations benefitting their mission work and all are invited to stay and enjoy lunch together.

Mission and Stewardship and Worship, Sacraments and Music have worked together to present this unique worship "service". Worship does not happen just on Sunday or just in the church. As we are instructed in Colossians 3:17:

"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

  Peacemaking Offering

Each autumn the Presbyterian Mission Agency invites GIPC to join with other Presbyterian congregations to promote peace and justice at local, national and global levels. As one of four special offerings throughout the year, the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program raises funds to transform cultures of violence into communities of peace. Twenty-five percent of the offering received by our church is to be directed to a program determined to be of special need or interest by our own Mission and Stewardship program. Examples set by other church communities have contributed to peacemaking work by supporting programs that: Prevent bullying in a school district (Fort Worth, TX); provide access to clean and sustainable water in communities where it does not exist (by Living Waters for the World in Central America; organize efforts to oppose violence against women in a crisis center (Lakeview, Oregon); seek religious tolerance for Christians in the Middle East (Iraq).
Please consider thoughtfully your commitment to give witness
to God's gift of peace through your offering. Special offering envelopes will be found in the pew racks in the Sanctuary now through October 12.
