Pay all your debts except the debt of love for others, never finish paying that! For if you love them, you will obey all God's laws, fulfilling all his requirements.

CROP Walk

Get out your walking shoes and join us on Saturday, September 20th for our 33rd annual CROP Walk. 42 years of Walking in Michigan has provided over $12 million of resources for Michigan hunger agencies and $37 million for the global hunger/poverty programs of CWS. More than 400 Michigan Hunger Agencies received over $431,000 in funds from local CROP Hunger Walks last year - so please consider either walking or supporting a walker on September 20th. You may sign up at the Crossroads.

Finding Hope- Grief Support Group

Hosted by York Connection

"At a time of such sadness and fear-this group gave me comfort and hope." Comment from past member.

The next class of Finding Hope is organizing for a September beginning. If you are interested in being a member of this group, or know someone in need please call.
This group, using the writings of Alan D. Wolfelt, Ph.D. from the Center for Loss is focused on those who are grieving the death of a family member; spouse, child, parent, etc. The goal of the group is to help move from grieving into hope and healing. Our resource books are "Understanding Your Grief: Ten Essential Touchstones for Finding Hope and Healing Your Heart" and "The Understanding Your Grief Journal". This small group of individuals meet weekly for ten weeks and move through the Touchstones. We celebrate the end of the group by acknowledging what we have learned about our growth. Per Dr. Wolfelt, growth means; encountering pain, change, a new inner balance with no end points, and exploring our assumptions about life.
To learn more about the possibilities of this new group please contact Susan Hurst, group leader at 734-671-1530 or [email protected].

Tips For Seniors

Life Lessons, from Regina Brett, of the Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio.

We can all benefit from her wise little morsels:
* Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
* Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
* However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
* Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
* If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
* Get rid of anything that isn't useful. Clutter weighs you down in many ways.
* Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.
* It's never too late to be happy. But it's all up to you and no one else.
* When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.
* Ladies: burn the candles, use the nice sheets and wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

Help Wanted!

The Communications Commission is looking for some people who want to help communicate the mission of our church to the larger community through the Internet's media applications.

We need:
* A Webmaster to maintain the GIPC website - www.gipc.org. We currently use a product called E-zekiel to support the website. If you are proficient in another product, we're amenable to converting. We would also provide training and support for the use of E-Zekiel if desired.
* Facebook Administrators to post current events and other submissions from members. Many members already use Facebook and are familiar with the product.
* YouTube support. We have a Channel - Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church - which needs more videos posted from member recorded events at church or wherever GIPC has a presence (e.g. Mission trips, Gleaners, Fort Street, General Assembly,  etc.)
* Ideas for other ways to expand our Internet presence (e.g. Twitter, InstaGram, whatever is next).

E-mail Carl at [email protected] or call 734-671-5768 if you'd like to become a member of GIPC's Communications Commission.

GIPC on YouTube
Thanks to Dave Martin, Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church now has a "Channel" on YouTube. If you logon to YouTube.com and search for "Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church", you will see videos of GIPC. The "Tour of  Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church" is the work of Dave Martin.  Check it out. There are also videos of many performances of Sunday morning performances of the Band including their performance at the General  Assembly in Detroit. You can also see our videos from a link on the gipc.org website.  From the Home page select "Service Recordings" (on the left side of the page). On the Service Recordings page select "Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church Videos".
If you have or take a video of a church activity and would like to put it on our "Channel", send it to me or post it yourself to YouTube and send me the link. We'll review the video for quality and applicability to our standard disclaimer. Contributors are invited and encouraged to submit videos.  The Communications Commission reserves the right to accept or reject submissions and to edit as necessary.

Welcome To Fall ~ Adult Nurture Classes

Welcome to fall at GIPC. Adult Nurture plans to ease the seasonal transition with class offerings that'll produce a Sunday morning smile and some serious thought on    Wednesday evening.

Sunday, September 7, we kick off Ed Hour with "From Season to Season:  Sports as American Religion." The premise of this 6-week study is that we invest in our sports more than our time and money; we invest them with our faith. When we consider the commitments made to uniforms and arenas, to play-offs and prizes, we realize the concept is not so far-fetched. The class will look at different sports and the writings of different theologians, all of whom contend that sports and religion each address specific needs. The class, led by Lea Schelke and Jim O'Brien, will run through October 12. Join us for what promises to be interesting discussion.

Our Wednesday evening classes begin on September 10, with a semester-long look at the interrelationship between violence and religion. Under the guidance of Dr. Loren Scribner, we'll study "Executing God: Rethinking Everything You've Been Taught About Salvation and the Cross". It's an in-depth look at what seem to be contradictory concepts, one which forces us to reconsider our own thoughts about God and atonement.

The first class, September 10, welcomes a guest lecturer, Dr. George Alcser, Chair of Religious Studies at Marygrove College, who will speak on "Religion and Violence". Dr. Alcser is an excellent speaker who has written extensively on this subject.

We hope to see you in this class; the conversation will be both spirited and thoughtful, and you'll want to be a part of the experience. You'll be able to purchase, in class, the $17 book we're using.

The Spire is a publication of the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church, 7925 Horsemill Road, Grosse Ile, Michigan. The purpose of this newsletter is to share news and information about GIPC and our denomination.

Contributions are invited and encouraged. The Communications Commission reserves the right to accept or reject submissions and to edit to fit available space or for style and consistency.

Material is due six business days before the first or the fifteenth of the month. Emailed submissions should be sent to [email protected].
