Sending Sunday ~ Adopt-A-Plot
Our church grounds are beautifully kept by The Green Team! Thanks to all who have given their time and efforts from Spring cleanup, planting, weeding, replacement of shrubs, watering (and repelling deer), through Fall Cleanup. Several visitors on GA Sunday expressed how beautiful the flowers and gardens were around GIPC. Adopt-A-Plot was very successful.
Special thanks to dedicated volunteers Melva Barstow, Kathy Benton, Steve Benton, Sandy Bettinger, Flora Case, Steff Cobb, Susan Coolsaet, Judy Dever, Pam Frucci, Greg Gentner, Barb Holbeck, Bill Jambeau, Jeanne Kennedy, Leigh Krauss, Carl Krohn, Diane Ledbetter, Doug Ledbetter, Don Ledbetter, Kathryn McGee, Emily Ng, Carol Person, Carole Poleski, Lea Schelke, Rebecca Seeley, and Marcia Woodley.

Tips For Seniors

Don't live a life full of regrets:
When you are having difficulty with your I-phone or computer, simply ask one of your grandchildren for assistance. They appear to know everything about modern technology. That isn't to say we seniors have nothing to teach them, however. If open to sharing, young people have much to gain from the wisdom and life lessons we have learned. In her work, as a palliative care nurse, Bonnie Ware compiled a list of her dying patients' most common regrets and reported them in the February, 2012 issue of AARP magazine. If young GIPC members you know assume York Tips is only for old folks, please share this advice with them:

1. Have the courage to live a life true to yourself, not the life that is expected of you:  Good health brings a freedom very few realize. Honor your dreams, along the way, for once you have lost your health, it may be too late to do so.

2. Don't work so hard you miss your children's youth and your spouse's companionship:  It's possible you may not need the income you think you do. Create space in your life for family and friends by simplifying your lifestyle and making conscious choices. You will become happier and open to new opportunities, ones more suited to your new lifestyle.

3. Have the courage to express your feelings:  Many people suppress their feelings to keep peace with others. They settle for a mediocre existence and never become the person they are truly capable of becoming. Often, illnesses develop, that are related to the bitterness and resentment they have harbored.

4. Stay in touch with old friends:  Don't become so caught-up in your own life that you let golden friendships slip away. Many fail to realize the benefits old friendships until they reach the end of life, a time when tracking them down may be impossible. Give all friendships the time and effort they deserve.
5. Happiness is a choice:  Often, the comfort of familiarity or fear of change causes us to be stuck in old patterns and old habits, pretending to be content. Choose happiness, instead: make a conscious effort to laugh and allow a little silliness into your life.

Adult Choir Potluck

Dear Singers: Those who sing regularly, those who sing irregularly [take that however you want], and those who just haven't gotten around to it yet:
It's time to plan to be a part of the GIPC Adult Choir. We gather at about 8:30 on Sunday mornings [and occasionally other times] to eat doughnuts, drink coffee, catch up on the latest news, and sing, usually in that order. We make joyful noises to the Lord at most 10:30 services, many 8:15 services, and on other special occasions, like Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, Interfaith events, etc.
This year's kick-off pot-luck will be at the home of Debbie Mitek, 8242 Sarah Court, GI, on Thursday, September 4, 2014, beginning at 6:00 pm.  Please call Sue Quinn  at 734-671-8399 or e-mail her: quinns@wowway.com to let her know what you would like to bring [hors d'oeuvre, salad, casserole, dessert]. Please bring your own beverage.
We are the hosts for the Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve Service on November 26. And at the request of Phil Reed, who wondered if we could do a cantata, we're going to do the Vivaldi Magnificat on December 14. So mark those two dates on your calendar.
Looking forward to a wonderful year of music making.
                 Musically yours,

                               James Parker

Mary/Martha Circle
Fellowship of Least Coin

Presbyterian Women have been a part of the Fellowship of Least Coin for 57 years. Every month from September to May when Mary/Martha Circle meets, we pass around a small bucket marked "Least Coin" to collect loose change. Our congregation is also asked to contribute on Least Coin Sunday which is added to our collection. A total of $94.90  was sent to Church Women United in NYC, which was forwarded to Geneva, and on to headquarters in Thailand for worthy causes which aid women and children. Least Coin is collected from 80 countries around the world. In 2013, the grand total was $297,100.

When Mary/Martha Circle meets on Tuesday, September 16th at Noon, we will begin collecting Least Coin for 2014-15. Mary/Martha Circle members who ordered Bible study books may pick them up in the church office for our first meeting. Books are $8 and $12 for the large print editions.
If you enjoy fellowship with other Presbyterian Women, please join us for study under various GIPC leaders. We bring a bag lunch and share study and conversation for a couple of hours beginning at Noon in the Fireside Room. In 2014-15, we are doing a contemporary study of 2 Corinthians with the title: "Reconciling Paul"

Presbyterian Women of Detroit (PWPD)

The PWPD usually meets the first Wednesday of the month from October to May for a business meeting, a program, and lunch together. Due to the Labor Day Holiday, the first gathering will be on September 10, 2014 from 9:30-11:30 am. A cluster meeting is planned with no lunch following. (Clusters are groups of churches in certain areas close to each other so the women of the churches can get to know each other better.) Clusters will meet at the Southfield Covenant Presbyterian Church with registration at 9:30 am.and the program from 9:45-11:30, featuring Renee Warman, who was well-received last year and will return as a motivational speaker to build up Presbyterian Women. Her talk is entitled: "Girl Talk II - Radical Hospitality." Mrs. Warman is involved in Glow Women's Ministries and has recorded many Christian songs with her family and choir. It is hoped several women from every church will attend. In lieu of lunch, light refreshments will be provided.
I have room for six riders who would enjoy meeting other Presbyterian women from other churches.
