Mission Trips

Many thanks to our Youth and Young Adults for their recent mission endeavors and sharing their insights and feelings about those experiences. Some youth worked in downtown Detroit during General Assembly week, some went on a work trip to Ghost Ranch, others went to Bethesda, Ohio's Sower Work Mission Program. All said they felt they were "growing closer to God" and were doing what they were "called to do" without seeking praise or reward.
An example for all of us perhaps?!
Special thanks to our Youth Coordinator, Grace Iglehart, for organizing and helping to channel all that enthusiasm and energy into works that benefit others!

Tips For Seniors

Life Lessons, offered by a 90 year-old woman:
"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the forty-plus lessons life has taught me. It is the most requested column I've ever written."

                                                         Regina Brett,

                               The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio

Here are a few to ponder:
*It's ok to let your children see you cry.
*Over prepare, then go with the flow.
*Ladies, be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
*No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
*Frame every so-called disaster with these words "In five years, will this matter?"
*Always choose life.
*Forgive everyone everything.
*What other people think of you is none of your business.
*It's ok to get angry with God. He can take it.
*Time heals everything. Give time time.

Yoga Class: Thursdays at 10:30 am.  All ages and levels of mobility are welcome. Cost is $5.00 per class. Class meets for 45 minutes.

Game Day: Through the summer, come play a friendly game of euchre, bridge or dominoes every Wednesday at 2:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall.

New Activity
Bridge Lessons, Part II: Join us on two Monday evenings in August for a Bidding class, led by Nancy Colina and Kathy Rankin. Learn, or review, some of the finer points of bidding; it'll make playing the game more enjoyable and more of a challenge. We'll be on the west side of the Fellowship Hall on August 11 and 18 at 6:30 pm. No sign-up necessary; the class does assume basic bridge knowledge.

Summer Free Lunch Program
                                     Needs Volunteers

Many low-income children rely on the free lunch program at school to get at least one hot meal a day. During the summer, some of these children go without much to eat at all. Last summer Wyandotte Presbyterian Church cooperated with a government program to help these kids by acting as a free-lunch center and it went extremely well! However, our church has a somewhat elderly and declining population so we are having difficulty finding enough able-bodied volunteers who are available during the working day.
Children up to the age of 18 (or age 26 with special needs) from the Downriver area can get a free hot lunch (pizza on Fridays!) between 11:30 and 12:30. The program started in late June and ends August 15th, so we need volunteers for the remaining weeks. We are most in need for volunteers to help set up--a truck delivers the food at our church at 10:45. We need people who can help carry it in and put it in place. Many of our church volunteers are elderly so this is where we are having the problem. Even if some people from your church could come just for that and only stay for 20 minutes or so, it would be a huge help. But they are welcome to stay and help serve food to the kids or wander around the cafeteria and chat with the children or their parents to make them feel welcome. I'm sure it's hard for some parents to have to rely on help with feeding their kids in the summer. This is a great opportunity to make them feel comfortable and show them the unconditional love of Christ! Then cleanup is immediately after, and this has been a problem for some of our elderly volunteers to dump vats of water that are hard for them to lift, so here again is an opportunity for an able-bodied volunteer from your church to come even just toward the end of the lunch hour to help with that.
Our church is located at Oak & 23rd, just east of Fort St. If you need more information or would like to sign up for a day or time to help out in the next 2 weeks, please call the Rev. Arthur Oberg at 734-272-6296 and he will put you in touch with the lady who does the scheduling.
                                         Sincerely and God Bless,
                                                         Jane Hunyor
