Tips For Seniors

"The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place."

-George Bernard Shaw

I have been advised by my adult children that, unless I text my grandchildren, I may be unable to communicate with them at all. Seriously? Granted, I-Phones are useful for sharing photos and sending urgent memos but are they in fact destined to replace the spoken word? Sadly, as I observe young people who seem unable to operate apart from their devices, I am becoming convinced my daughter-in-law is right. At family events, I have witnessed the eyes of young family members darting to their devices while pretending to be engaged with others. Multi-tasking is a commendable talent but am I wrong to resent sharing one-on-one moments with an electronic device? While eating supper in a restaurant one evening, I observed a small family seated in a booth across the room. Sadly, each had their head down, their thumbs tapping away on a device and their minds focused on the clouds, like a cluster of mutant technophiles!
Amazing and efficient as it is, new technologies are altering modern vocabulary and personal behaviors and are having a distressing, negative impact upon conventional communication. In their zeal to connect with "friends" world-wide, young people neglect relationships with their family and neighbors and are ignoring the importance of direct conversation. Even more alarming are occurrences where kids (and adults) use Facebook and or Twitter to slam or bully others. Somehow, they feel justified in expressing anger and voicing disrespect because they can do so, without looking their victims in the eye. Everyone deserves the right of direct, two-way conversation. There is strong a basis for having concern for a generation that appears unable and unwilling to sustain effective, inter-personal communication skills. I suggest we wise and concerned seniors have thoughtful, technology-free discussions with our device-addicted loved ones, before they mutate further.
