We are Christ's ambassadors. God is using us to

Good News! Challenging 'Forecast' ...

From the GIPC Annual Report: "The big news at the 2013 Annual Meeting is that we have paid off our mortgage obligation. As of January 22, 2014, GIPC is debt free! This is nine years ahead of schedule (according to the original motion voted on by the congregation which called for a 20-year promissory note) and six months ahead of the final payment due on the current loan."
"In eleven years from February 2003 to February 2014, GIPC completed a construction project of 3.2 million dollars, raised 3.7 million dollars for loan payments (including $576,000 in interest) and now has a facility for ministry and mission that is second to none and completely paid for!
A special thank you to all who made this happen. To all who served on program and capital campaign committees, to all who made sacrificial gifts of time and treasure, to all who prayed for the church and its ministry, thank you!"

Looking Forward in 2014:
"Now that GIPC is debt free, I believe we are ready to address our next important challenge. We are at the end of an era, a sea of change in the religious ecology of North America and the role of Protestant congregations. The importance and influence of churches such as GIPC in our culture have been in decline for at least three decades. Gone are the days when all we had to do is open the doors and people would find us. Gone are the days when all the church had to do was market itself in order to maintain its membership and budget. In our post-Christian society, the church cannot expect privileged treatment, high-visibility, or ready acceptance. The challenge is before us: How will we respond to the new era in which we find ourselves? As a congregation, what do we need to learn in order to be agents of God's kingdom in our culture? As a congregation, what do we need to do to expand our ministry and mission? How shall we continue as vibrant and strong witnesses of Jesus Christ? In 2014, I hope to engage us all in an exciting discussion about how to address the challenge before us. What are your ideas?
Thank you for a special 2013! Please know I count it an honor and privilege to serve as your Pastor/Head of Staff. I am grateful for our deepening friendship. May God continue to bless us as we live our faith together as Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church!"
                                                               Faithfully,
                                                                    Philip J. Reed

  Tips For Seniors

The York Connect Life File:
If you were to become ill or die suddenly, would your spouse or adult children have the information they need to care for you or comply with your final wishes? If you are like most of us, you have good intentions but have failed to act on them. To encourage GIPC members to record their vital information and assist them with that task, York Connect has created the Life File. Introduced in February, York Connect considers the Life File so important they continue to remind GIPC parishioners, via all media available.
The "Life File" is a notebook in which you record, and keep, all vital information about yourself and your family: who you are, your medical history, your possessions, your estate plans, your final arrangements, etc. Once completed, your Life File becomes the go-to source for responders and next-of-kin, enabling them to meet your needs and wishes.
The York Connection is selling "Life File" notebooks at the Crossroads for two dollars apiece. Included with the notebook is a "Personal Information" section for you to complete. Every month, an additional, free section will be available at the Crossroads. There are nine, in all. We are encouraged by the fact, the entire, first shipment of Life File notebooks sold-out Sunday, February second, but orders for additional copies are being accepted. You may sign-up, for your personal copy of the Life File notebook, at the crossroads, Sunday mornings. You will be notified when the new shipment arrives. York Connect is confident this may become the best $2.00 you have ever spent.

Drop in "Feeling Fit" Yoga Class meets on Thursdays at 1:00 pm. All ages and levels of mobility are welcome. Cost is $5.00 a class. Class meets for 45 minutes.

Jigsaw Puzzles: Winter is a great time to work on puzzles,
and we have some shelved in the Fireside Room. Set one up on a table on the west side of the Fellowship Hall, and feel free to leave it there and work on it at your leisure. Parents, we will put out puzzles for children so they too can participate.

Game Day:
Come play a friendly game of euchre, bridge or dominoes on Wednesdays from 4-6 pm. in Fellowship Hall. Bridge game begins at 2 pm. Stay for dinner ~ only $4 a person. Sign up at the Crossroads or call the church office 734-676-8811 to reserve your meal.

SNOW DAY
Wednesday, February 5 was on my calendar to attend the PWPD gathering in Royal Oak. The program featured a speaker, Kimberly Simmons, whose great, great, great grandmother at age 16 journeyed on the Underground Railroad that took her from slavery in St. Louis to
freedom in Canada in 1842. I headed for our GIPC to pick up Dianne Bridges, who had signed up to attend the gathering. I drove 10 miles an hour down Meridian Rd. at 8:30 that morning, visibility was almost 0, and on Horsemill a wrecker was pulling a car out of the ditch ahead of me. Even though I've been faithfully attending gatherings for lo these
many years, I decided not to chance the drive to Royal Oak. Jan Slater was the only one at our church and helped me find the phone number of the Presbyterian church in Royal Oak. I called and said I wasn't going to make it. The receptionist agreed with me that the roads were
treacherous. Later I found out, the speaker had called and cancelled, our Justice & Peace member, who was scheduled to do the motion break, had cancelled due to all the snow, and our moderator arrived late taking 1-½ hours to go a distance that normally would take ½ hour.
About 35 women showed up, mostly from the Royal Oak church and they improvised a program based on experiences the women present had with Black History Month. One wife of a minister back during the Civil Rights days, said her husband marched in the South with the blacks seeking voting rights. When he got back to their church in Indiana, he was asked to leave as their pastor!  Hearing how the leaders
at the gathering adopted to the situation reminded me of a saying I once saw on a poster on the door of a minister: "Blessed are the flexible, for they will not be bent out of shape."

PW RETREAT
Saturday, March 8th is planned as a time to be refreshed by the spirit.  A retreat from 8:30-4 pm. will be held at the Rosedale Gardens Church in Livonia. The brochure, announcing the retreat, asks if you are "tired?
Worn out?"  With work shops and a "pep" talk by the keynote speaker Rev. Dr. Lorolie Andrews, the Saturday retreat is planned to answer those concerns and provide a place where you can relax and re-group.
The cost is $30 which includes the luncheon. The deadline for registration was February 28. By calling Pam Gunderson at (734) 422-0494, I'm sure they can accommodate you if you miss the deadline. If you would like to go, I have a van that holds seven comfortably.

SAVE CAMPBELL SOUP BAR CODES
There's a container that looks like a Campbell Soup can in the kitchen to drop off the bar code from the labels. If you buy Campbell soup, snip it off and add to the collection. I present a bag of labels to the two elementary schools on Grosse Ile which they use to buy needed equipment. Mary/Martha Circle regularly brings the labels to our Tuesday Bible study sessions.
