Psalm 40:1-2
I wait patiently for God to help me; the he listened and heard my cry. He
lifted me out of the pit of despair, out from the bog and the mire, and set
my feet on a hard, firm path and steadied me as I walk along.

January 26
Isaiah 9:2
The people who walk in darkness shall see a great light--- a light that
will shine on all those who live in the land of the shadow of death.

Sending Sunday
AARP TAX-AIDE Volunteers

Since July, 2013, the WS&M Commission has been choosing GIPC volunteer groups to be commissioned on the second Sunday of each month. We have many faithful volunteers doing work in various areas in our name. We do this to recognize the volunteers and also to educate the congregation in the various opportunities available to serve.
The AARP Tax-Aide Program is the nation's largest Volunteer-run tax preparation service. The teams target their free service to low and middle income taxpayers with special attention to those over 60.
The Downriver program began 35 years ago with eight volunteers. Last year it had grown to 27 volunteers with 12 from GIPC and an additional 4 GIPCers will be trained this year.
On Sending Sunday, January 12, 2014, the volunteers involved with the AARP Tax Preparation Program were recognized for their time and efforts. Please thank the following GIPC volunteers for their service as they participate in this worthwhile cause:

Flora Case, Larry Clemons, Jeanne and Phil Kennedy, Carl Crohn, Toni Mann, Frank Moore, Kathy Rankin, Ruth Richardson, Ron and Yi-Chia Schmaeman, and Jan Slater. New volunteers starting in 2014 are: Mary Adair, Sue Ashley, Sue Hurst, and Nancy Morrison.
Volunteer facilitators and preparers are trained and certified in cooperation with the IRS. Last year more than 1,300 taxpayers filed their federal, state and local taxes with the assistance of Tax-Aide volunteers.
Tax preparation is made by phone appointment only. Call 734-250-8487 starting on January 21, Monday through Thursday, 9am - 2pm. The actual appointments begin on February 3rd and run through April 15th, 2014.
This free service is offered at:
37 North Church
14250 Reeck Road
Southgate, Michigan 48195.

York Tips
Now in my seventies and actively celebrating my senior status,
attractive auto insurance rates and a concern over threats to Social
Security, influenced me to consider the importance of belonging to
AARP. Renewing my membership awakened me to the numerous
discounts available to AARP members and prompted me to investigate
additional opportunities to save. I discovered many more, on the
following web sites:

More than one hundred businesses, including restaurants, theatres, supermarkets, department stores, transportation companies, telephone and cable providers, utilities, banks and other such everyday businesses offer discounts to seniors in the range of 10%-15%. Added up, they represent a huge savings. The majority are unpublicized: sales persons are frequently warned by employers not to offer senior discounts for fear of angering or embarrassing their customers. Most senior discounts are available, only if you ask for them. Some may ask you to show your AARP card or proof of age, an uncomfortable requirement for some folks but, by tossing vanity aside, senior status can be turned into a valuable resource. If asking for a senior discount is an embarrassment to you, change your motive for doing so: we are called to be wise stewards and as such, we all have a responsibility to "Live simply so others can simply live." Turn your efforts into a stewardship project by donating your senior savings to an agency that serves the indigent. The York Connection has compiled a partial list of companies that offer senior discounts. Copies are provided at the Crossroads for your use.

"Hands"

Your hands are shaped like His, and so,
Be careful in the things they do.
Let them be quick to lift the weak,
Let them be kind and soft and strong.clasped-hands-sky.jpg
May they be swift to heal the sick,
To ease a load . . . to right a wrong.
Your hands are made like His.

Beware!  They hold the weight of no man's pain,
Who asked their aid to help Him bear
His suffering . . . and asked in vain.
He made the deaf to hear . . . the lame to walk . . .
The blind to see,
Until one day, the fools, they came and nailed
His hands upon a tree.

Our hands are shaped like His.
As wings ~
Let them caress all living things . . .
Lest He look down on earth and see
What things are wrought beneath the sun
By us, His images . . . and be ashamed
Of what His hands have done.
