Isaiah 2:3
"Come", everyone will say, "let us go up the mountain of the Lord, to the temple of the Lord of Israel; there he will teach us his laws, and we will obey them. For in those days the world will be ruled from Jerusalem."

Romans 15:4
These things that are written in the scriptures so long ago are to teach us patience and to encourage us, so that we will look forward expectantly to the time when God will conquer sin and death.

  Tips For Seniors

Lack of transportation is no reason to stay at home.
Issues related to senior drivers and transportation for seniors continue to be topics of concern for your York Connection. The York Connection is a task-force consisting of seniors like yourself, confronting the issues of an aging congregation and taking steps to help GIPC serve it better.
In the May 15 Spire, York Yips, we described the Safe Driver Agreement, a signed document in which older drivers agree in-advance to forfeit their car keys voluntarily, when a trusted friend or relative determines they should no longer drive. (Or continue driving, with restrictions.) It is a wise choice for an aging driver and one we should all consider. Contact Gene Swift for further details. If attending GIPC Sunday services is challenging because you are unable to drive yourself, you may call Ethel Carver and she will arrange to have you picked-up by a member of our congregation.
Night driving is an issue that effects seniors when diseases of the eye destroy night vision. That should not be an excuse for curtailing evening church activities. Game Day, Friday at the Movies and Wednesday Night Suppers were all organized with seniors and singles in-mind. We realize darkness comes far too early in wintertime but consider taking the Grosse Ile Recreation shuttle bus, arriving prior to five o'clock. You will always find a church member who is willing to take you home again. You must simply ask!
On weekdays, the Grosse Ile Recreation Department's handicap-equipped van is available from 1:00-5:00pm. The cost is $5.00 on Grosse Ile and $6.00 off-Island. If you call Susan, at 734-216-4905, she will pick you up and take you to your destination. Please note that a maximum distance applies to off-Island travel. If you are not handicapped and must travel in the morning or on weekends, call Al Kwas, at Kwas Services, 313-319-1542. This Island resident offers reasonable rates and will travel greater distances.

Game Day:
Come play a friendly game of euchre, bridge or dominoes every Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. in fellowship hall.  Bridge game begins at 2 pm.

Christmas Joy Offering

joystar

During the month of December, GIPC receives the Christmas Joy Offering from its generous congregation. Donations to the Christmas Joy Offering are divided equally between the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church, USA and Presbyterian Racial Ethnic Schools and Colleges. Read about specific instances of people and schools who receive assistance in the weekly inserts in your December church bulletins. Special Joy Offering envelopes may be found in the church pew racks.

   Thank you for your gifts.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is working in collaboration with our mission partner, the National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP), and other members of ACT Alliance to respond to this crisis. Initial response includes the provision of nonfood items, material resources, drinking water, emergency-shelter kits and cash-for-work-programs.
Will our congregation stand in the GAP (Give/Act/Pray) to help survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan?
What you can do: Donate now. Learn more: get the PDA situation report or online: click here.

Please pray that through the response of the faith community, the people and communities affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan and those offering assistance will be strengthened, have their needs met, and be reminded of the hope and compassion that are found in Christ. Join the PC(USA) in prayer.

One Bible ~ One Year ~ Together

The GIPC Adult Nurture Commission is challenging our entire congregation to read the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation.

For ADULTS, we have chosen The Year of the Bible: An Enhanced Guide to Reading Scripture Together to direct our reading. Following the schedule in this booklet, each day in 2014 we will read 2 chapters from the Old Testament and 1 chapter from either the New Testament or the Psalms. That's all there is to it. Use your favorite Bible translation or Peterson's The Message. Optional activities:
*You will be given the opportunity to join a small discussion group, if you wish, to encourage each other and discuss the week's readings.
*From time to time we will offer large group sessions to answer questions or raise issues.
*Participants will have the opportunity to meet as a group at a special event with our 2014 Theologian in Residence, biblical scholar Rev. Dr. Earl Palmer.
Sign up at the Crossroads and purchase your reading guide for $5.

For YOUTH, Grace Iglehart and the Youth Nurture Commission are planning an engaging way for youth to participate. Watch for details.

For CHILDREN, we encourage kids to read a bible story each evening from The Children's Bible in 365 Stories that they received at baptism. Books will be available for purchase for those who do not have one.

KICKOFF POTLUCK  Sunday, January 5, at noon.  Bring a salad or dessert to pass. ANC will provide lasagna, beverages and rolls.

Reading begins New Year's Day, 2014!

Keeping Busy AT GIPC

We will view the holiday movie Love Actually. From Amazon reviews: "Get ready for fun!" (Leah Rozen, People) with the "feel good movie of the year!" (Clay Smith, Access Hollywood). Love Actually is the ultimate romantic comedy from the makers of Bridget Jones's Diary and Notting Hill. Funny, irresistible and heartwarming, an all-star cast (Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth and Emma Thompson, to name a few) will take you on a breathtaking tour of love's delightful twists and turns. Fall under the spell of Love Actually and share the laughs and charm again and again.
All are welcome at Friday Flix. Popcorn is free. Come join us in the cinema, Room 205, on December 6th at 2 pm.!

women4women-knitting4peace is a grass-roots organization dedicated to crafting hope, healing and peace one stitch at a time. See our display, pick up a bookmark, and Sit n' Knit  for a spell. We are currently making scarves. Knit one row or 20 and the next person will do the same.  Soon we will have a warm scarf for a woman in need. There are also samples and instructions for making bright colored baby washcloths for layettes. Materials are located on the bench outside the church office. This is sponsored by the York Connection and is open to all who want to Sit n' Knit!

Please join the GIPC Green Team.
The Property Committee is forming a GIPC Green Team. Join us as we explore ways to help keep our church grounds beautiful. Sign up at the crossroads and you'll be contacted soon. Fall cleanup, spring flower planting, and Adopt-a-Plot are a few ideas we'd like to implement.

Clean seasonal clothing is always needed at the Fort Street Open Door. Please put items in a plastic trash bag marked "Fort Street" and place in the closet at the bottom of the stairs by the west entrance door.
Thank You For Old Hymnals

Greetings Vicki,

This is a great time of the year when we set our sights towards welcoming the Lord in December, and it will be especially great for us at Park Church, thanks to the generous donation of over 240 Hymnals from your church to ours.
Your gifts would not have come at a better time as our church is at the threshold of being infused with new members as a result of the popularity of our weekly food program.
We are grateful that you chose our church and congregation over all others, including your internal affection to the books over the years, and believe that it is God's way of creating a lasting bond between our churches and among us Christians.

Please, extend our appreciations to Grace, Emma, Chelsea, Leah, Greg and Shannon for their help in delivering the hymnals and a big Thank You to your congregation from all of us.

May the Lord continue to bless your church with good tidings and spiritual growth.

Faithfully,

Banyuga Pefok
Clerk of Council
