Amazing Grace!
Our Grace House Mission is growing! The Session recently approved the support of time and talent for another family in need of a home.
A generous member of our congregation is offering a 3 bedroom home in Wyandotte to be used in the same way as the first Grace House. It is the hope that we might be able to act as a network (babysitting, mentoring, help with professional training, tutoring) to a family along with the help of Wayne Metro Community Action Agency, who will provide a caseworker. The exact needs of the family, of course, are unknown at this point, but we look forward to establishing a relationship with the family via two liaisons from our congregation. We will also be asking for household items, some gently used, some new to furnish the home. Please consider helping to turn this house into a home for a needy family!

Tips For Seniors

The two things that immediately come to mind, when thinking of Thanksgiving, are turkey and football. There are anecdotes about turkeys and anecdotes about football but there are few anecdotes about football from the perspective of a turkey:
A professional NFL team had just finished their daily practice session when a large turkey came strutting onto the field. While the players gazed in amazement, the turkey walked up to the head coach and demanded to be given a chance to play at tight end. Everyone stared in silence as the turkey caught pass after pass and ran right through the defensive line. When the turkey returned to the sidelines, the coach exclaimed, "You are amazing! If you sign up for the season, I'll see to it that you get a huge bonus."  "Forget the bonus," replied the turkey, "I want to know if your season goes past Thanksgiving Day!"

This story brings to mind a Super Star, 2000 years ago, whose season ended abruptly. When you sit down to your Thanksgiving dinner turn off the televison for a while and take time to praise Him.

Happy Thanksgiving from the York Connection!

   "Season of Hope"

December 1st at 3 pm

Join us for a time of warm fellowship to begin the Advent Season together. This year we've invited women from the other Grosse Ile Churches to join us, both as guests and in hosting a table if they'd like. Would you consider volunteering to be a table hostess, bring bite-sized goodies for the tea, or help with set up?

Look for the sign up sheet at the Crossroads.

Thank You!

Pal Craftaid  Mission Project

THANKS SO MUCH ....your purchases  on November 10th provided support for the four ministries of compassion for the elderly and children in Palestine resulted in $2280. Some of you will remember that our church initially began supporting this mission effort way back in 2001. Liz Knott is its founder and she has been here at our church through the years. This ministry was established in 1993 after Liz retired and she participated in a peacemaking visit to Israel/ Palestine with the Global Ministries & Peacemaking Unit of the P.C.U.S.A. Pal Craftaid is a volunteer, non profit ministry of compassion and healing, which provides work and economical support to Christian managed ministries by church groups.
Pal Craftaid has grown to be a wonderful support to many families and the preservation of the fine Palestinian Needlework which is cross-stitch entirely done by hand on closely woven fabric. As one learns about the colors, stitches and fabrics they are indicators of the regional origin of the embroidery. As you know unemployment is very high in this part of the world...so your support assists with many basic needs. The olive wood used for the crosses, nativities and additional pieces are made from the pruned branches from olive trees. These pieces are handcrafted by artisans in the II Bambano Shop in Bethlehem.
A few years ago Liz Knott passed the mantle to a Pal Craftaid Board who now have a website which you may read more about the history, ministries and also order items. The site is: www.palcraftaid.org
Liz Knott and her co worker, Connie DePond, who began this great ministry were recognized for their efforts at a General Assembly a couple of years ago. They have recently moved to a retirement setting in Iowa. Thanks to Liz for her vision to bring such a fine ministry and to each of you for your support. Thanks to Carol Hylkema (Dearborn, MI) who currently serves as Board President...and who brought all the lovely crafts to our church last Sunday morning,

NOVEMBER PWPD GATHERING NOVEMBER 6th FEATURED SPEAKER ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING

The Justice & Peace Committee of the Presbyterian Women of the Presbytery of Detroit recently surveyed PWs at the September, October and November gatherings to find out what their main concerns are that their committee can concentrate on for the two-year term of the newly
installed moderator of PWPD Joan Lockard. The results of a list of 18 concerns that include gun violence, domestic abuse, hunger, homelessness, and human trafficking were tabulated at the November 11th meeting of the J & P Committee. A top concern in 2011-13 was human trafficking so the committee was able to line up attorney Kelly A.
Carter who works out of the Detroit office of the Attorney General. Her main job is prosecuting those caught in human trafficking. She was the speaker at the November 6th gathering of PWPD at the First Presbyterian Church of Farmington. Dianne Bridges, Anita Teresko, and I attended and, as chair of the J & P Committee, I introduced Ms.
Carter. It turns out she attended Alma College, U. of Detroit-Mercy Law School and graduated from Grosse Ile High School in 1987, the same year as our son Jay and his wife Lisa!
Ms. Carter presented a power point that highlighted the nine cases she has tried and gotten seven convictions.  One is pending. She talked about how the victims are in most cases vulnerable girls who are exploited by the perpetrator who exerts power over her, gets her addicted to drugs, and puts fear in her that if caught she'll be in trouble for prostitution. The speaker also mentioned modern slavery cases she's uncovered where foreigners are brought over to this country and treated as modern slaves.
That day, she said, the Michigan Commission on Human Trafficking was presenting their findings to the Michigan legislature. Safe shelters for victims of human trafficking are Alternative for Girls and Vista Maria.
Ms. Carter told us that we as concerned women can be on the lookout for possible victims of human trafficking, help mentor young girls, and give them the support they need.  She gave us the hotline maintained by the Attorney General's office: (888)373-7888 and their website:
http://michigan.gov/ag/0,4534,7-164-60857---,00.html

INGATHERING AT WESTMINSTER CHURCH INVOLVED 23
CHURCHES - OCTOBER 21-3.

Sherry Brown, co-chair of the Ingathering (sewing projects prepared by 23 churches in the Presbytery of Detroit,) reported at the November 6th gathering that 62 volunteers showed up to sort, box up, and deliver a mountain of items donated to a long list of centers in the metro Detroit area.  According to Sherry, the PWPD is one of the few presbyteries to take part in an Ingathering and this year's value in goods totaled $185,000!

DECEMBER CHRISTMAS GATHERING AT GROSSE PTE. MEMORIAL CHURCH

Traditionally, the December gathering of PWPD has a Christmas theme and on December 4th we meet at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church. The program will be given by the music director at the church with soloists from his church choir. This church puts me in mind of an English cathedral and should be decorated beautifully for Christmas.
Anyone who would enjoy attending this gathering, give me a call. I have a van that holds seven comfortably!

 COOKING WITH MATT  Repeat Performance

We knew Matt Hurst was a welcome presence, but Adult Nurture clearly underestimated both the extent of his popularity and the demand for his recipes. The original date filled quickly and we had to close the sign-up, but Matt has very graciously agreed to repeat the program on Sunday, November 24, 2-5 pm in the kitchen.

Join us as Matt demonstrates the best culinary techniques for creating meals that'll work wonderfully on these cold days. Matt works with ingredients readily available, price ranges that are realistic and he's there to answer questions as he creates.
