TIPS FOR SENIORS

Humor and laughter come from the silly things we think, hear, or share with others. When we laugh, negative emotions are pushed away: it is impossible to be stressed and to laugh at the same time. Laughter provides exercise for the body by stimulating the heart and circulatory system. It improves lung capacity and exercises facial and abdominal muscles. Laughter enhances restful sleep and is a natural anti-aging tool. I often admired the ability of my sweet, old mother-in-law to find humor in ordinary daily occurrences. She endured a difficult life simply by observing it from a humorous perspective. Often there is humor in the simplest of truths:
* Light travels faster than sound. That's why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
* If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.
* All mushrooms are edible; some only once.
* We never really grow up, we simply learn how to act in public.
* Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting in in a fruit salad.
* I once thought I wanted a career but it turns out I just wanted a paycheck.
* A clear conscience is the sign of a fuzzy memory.
* You're only young once but you can be immature forever.
* You don't need a parachute to skydive. You do need a parachute to skydive twice.
* I used to be indecisive; now I'm not so certain.
* You are never too old to learn something stupid.
* Hospitality is making your guests feel at home even when you wish they were.
*Where there's a will, I want to be in it.

Peacemaking Offering

The Peacemaking Offering....will be received throughout the month of October. This Special Offering of the P.C.U.S.A. is one of our four offerings taken each year at GIPC. Affirming that God's peace-giving is central to the gospel message, over 4,500 local Presbyterian churches pledged at the 1980 General Assembly to incorporate peacemaking into their congregational ministry and mission projects. The goal of the Peacemaking Offering is to raise awareness of ways to promote peace between people and to care for our earth.
Inserts in our church bulletin each Sunday in October detail some of the worldwide efforts chosen by Presbyterian Mission Agency or by local churches such as ours. Each congregation that participates retains 25% of the Peacemaking offering they receive to support a local area project. GIPC will use its portion of the offering this year to support Freedom House in Detroit. Its focus is to provide a temporary home for survivors of persecution from around the world who seek legal asylum in the U.S. and Canada. In September we collected paper products to donate for use at Freedom House.
Peacemaking Offering envelopes will be in the pew racks during the month of October. Be sure to indicate "Peacemaking" and your regular offering envelope number on the special envelope.

Thank you for your prayers and gifts in support of this offering,

            - Your GIPC Mission and Stewardship Committee.

What if GIPC's furnace did not work? What if the boiler went down? What if the hot water heater blew? Someone from the Property Committee would be contacted and, more than likely, that person would be NEIL JOHNSON. It is time we thank Neil for his years of service to GIPC.

Join us in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, October 27th following 10:30 worship, to recognize NEIL for giving so much to make us comfortable as we do God's work!
