The Lord's Day
Is there a wise older person in your life who shares life's lessons? My Grandmother Sofia was a great influence on my life. These were her words to live by: "You are a child of God. Therefore, respect humanity and the earth; be kind, loving and compassionate; and do unto others as you would have others do unto you." From the age of three until I graduated from high school at age 17, I spent every summer in Iowa with my grandparents and the other nine months at home in Michigan. I had friends in Michigan and Iowa. Rituals were a way of life. Each day began and ended with the saying of the Lord's Prayer. Sunday was the Sabbath, and the rest of the week was for everything else. My grandparents were immigrants. Grandfather arrived in 1918, a couple years before my grandmother. She followed with the two children. One of my accomplishments was helping my grandmother study so she could get her citizenship papers - that was a very proud day for us both! I credit my Grandmother Sofia for my passion for older adult ministry. She passed on great wisdom. My grandmother and parents made me what I am today. The wisdom Grandmother Sofia shared taught me that much is to be learned from older adults. My experience is validated by a recently published book by Karl Pillemer, 30 Lessons for Living (Hudson Street Press, 2011). The majority of the older adults interviewed (almost 1000) noted that the Golden Rule was their guiding pronciple for living. The Golden Rule comes from the Bible. There are versions in other religions as well. Dr. Pillemer says: "We must work hard to empathize with other people, to understand their perspectives, to feel as they feel, to see them as fellow travelers along life's difficult road. Such compassion and sympathy make it natural to treat others as we would like to be treated." A question each of us might ask ourselves is, who have I helped today?
Loving God, may we practice the Golden Rule, remembering you are with us always. Amen.

York Connection
The PCUSA church-planning calendar designates the first week in May as Older Adult Week. This week is dedicated to older adults because they are the backbone of our church, our nation and the world. The purpose of Older Adult Week is to help congregations recognize aging as a natural part of living, involving life from birth to death and to affirm the worth of persons in all stages of development and at all functional levels. Each year a special theme is chosen around Older Adult Week and Presbyterian Older Adult Ministry Network (P.O.A.M.N.) produces a planning guide to help congregations recognize and honor older church members. The Older Adult Ministry Planning Guide is available on the P.O.A.M.N web-site as a free, printable Adobe Acrobat pdf file and in hard copy ($2.00) from the Presbyterian Distribution Service at: www.pcusa.org/marketplace
Tips For Seniors
Scam of the Month:
The caller identifies himself/herself as a Jury Duty Coordinator and claims you have ignored a summons for jury duty and you face arrest. If you protest by saying you never received the summons, the scam artist asks for your Social Security number and date of birth, so he/she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. If you comply, your identity has been stolen! A legitimate source will never ask for this information over the phone.
Game Day - Wednesdays, 4-6 pm
Meet in the west side of the Fellowship Hall to play Euchre, Canasta, Mahjong, Dominoes, or bring your own game. Guests are always welcome. |

Adult Nurture Classes
Starting May 5, the Rev. Phillip Reed will continue from his November 18th class Christianity After Religion: The end of the Church and the Birth of a New Spiritual Awakening by Diana Butler Bass. Spending her career teaching the history, culture, and politics of religion and engaging church communities across the nation, she brings forth her deep knowledge of the latest national studies and polls. These along with her own ground breaking analysis, seek to fully comprehend the decline in Christian attendance and affiliation that started decades ago and has increased exponentially in recent years. Join us Sunday May 5 & 12th, in the Fireside room as we hear Bass' call to approach faith with a newfound freedom that is both life-giving and service-driven. It is a hope-filled plea to see and participate in creating a fresh, vital, contemporary way of faith that stays tuned to the real message of Jesus.
Grace Inglehart will lead an adult class from May 19th through June 3rd. Her topic for this class is based on the book The Spirit and Culture of Youth Ministry by John Roberto, Wesley Black, and Roland Martinson. This book is based on a national study on congregations that repeatedly have youth with vibrant, Christian faith and what they do to foster that faith. Through this study which included congregations from seven different denominations (Assemblies of God, Evangelical Covenant, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), Presbyterian Church (USA), Roman Catholic, Southern Baptist, and United Methodist Church, the authors have found 44 faith assets that are needed in order for a church to have an exemplary youth ministry. This study also offers its readers strategies and tools for building and maintaining this type of youth ministry. Grace feels that it will have a lot to teach her and our congregation about how to best help our youth grow in their faith. Please join us on Sunday mornings in the Fireside room to learn more about how we as a congregation can help our youth grow in their faith. |

A Special Thank You
We are so blessed at GIPC with our new projector which is used in the sanctuary during worship. It provides new technology and offers a visual component to worship. We are all lifelong learners with various learning modes. The projector helps us more effectively reach our visual learners and give all of us an opportunity to enhance our worship experience with the viewing of beautiful and appropriate visual stimulation. The art work that has been shared has inspired many members. The art work used in worship during Lent also stimulated great discussion during our Sunday evening Lenten services. The Worship, Sacraments & Music Commission extends sincere thanks to the anonymous donor who made this possible.
