TRANSPORTATION/SPORTS CAMP

Dear Parents,

This week was all about movement. Campers were coming and going and running and throwing. That is what transportation and sports is all about though, right? Each morning began with a short video and subsequent circle time discussion about the history, rules and mechanics of baseball, boats, basketball, trains and trucks.

For example, a much enjoyed and informative lesson about trains, their origins (history) as well as how they work and the different parts of a train engine. Campers also learned about various water craft transportation, such as hover crafts, different types of boats, submarine and other underwater vessels. We had great fun learning about the importance of traffic signs and other signs that has to do with transportation. The campers even took a walk to the Alameda Police Station and other parts of Park Street to practice observing and obeying traffic signs and lights. That is some very practical knowledge!

There were so many different kinds of puzzles, crafts and games to enforce learning, such as creating personal license plates with each child's birthday month and year used as their plate number.  Campers made their own transportation vehicles out of cardboard tubes and small shoe boxes that were colorfully decorated. Campers are even doing word tracing for different words that are used for various modes of transportation in both Spanish and English!

Campers also watched videos and talked about baseball and basketball this week. Sports are everywhere in our country and other countries so we incorporated the Olympics in our discussions as well. We learned about the rules of baseball and soccer. We talked about the various Olympic events that were on the television each day this week and also about the history of the Olympics and what each color of the rings represent. Yesterday we all had a great time playing basketball (with hoops at the appropriate height for our little players).

Campers have gone to the park every single day this week to enjoy lessons by Soccer Shots! Luckily the weather has been perfect, the walk short and sweet and the coaches ...just amazing. The joy could be seen on the campers' faces and the energy in their playing. Their individual skill improvement was obvious by the end of the week.

Next week, we will have a great time learning more about submarines and other watercraft, all kinds of safety vehicles (used by the coast guard, fire fighters, ambulance drivers and the police), golf, water sports and...wait for it...you guessed it...DRAG RACING!

Thank you and have a great weekend! We hope to see you NEXT Saturday (see below).

Just a reminder: Next Saturday (August 27th) from 10am-2pm is our first School Community Building Day to be held at the Taylor Campus (1400 6th Street). It is a wonderful way to get to know other TCU & MESA families. Please email the school office if you can help out with any small tasks at thechildunique@yahoo.com.

Dear Summer Parents,

We have decided to send our Enewsletter for all sessions to all of our Summer Parents so that parents of children enrolled in the current camp can see what their children are doing and parents of children enrolled in a different camp can get a good idea of what each of our camps has to offer.  If you prefer to be removed from our list please email the Encinal office at thechildunique@yahoo.com.

If you would like to sign up for any of our camps, please visit our website and go to the "Rates & Calendar" Form page to download, fill out and return a copy of the "Summer Brochure." We look forward to a great summer!
