Room to Grow NEW YORK Summer 2015 NEWS |

|
Dear Friends,
The National Center for Education Statistics recently reported that "living in poverty during early childhood is associated with lower than average academic performance that begins in kindergarten and extends through elementary and high school." Room to Grow addresses this issue by working with families to support school readiness, social-emotional development, and health and wellness in the earliest years; all of which are important factors in the long-term success of children. As we approach the last days of summer and prepare for the school year, we look forward to our continued work together in helping vulnerable children enter school ready to learn and succeed. Thank you for your ongoing support and enjoy the rest of your summer!
Warmly,
Allyson Crawford Executive Director, New York

Over the past 15 years, our family center has been well-loved and well-used by hundreds of babies and their families - cumulatively, over 10,000 visits! Now it's critical to reinvest in our space, creating a more welcoming environment where families can enjoy their visits and find refuge. Contact Allyson Crawford to support this exciting project.

Ferdina & Malcolm's Story
|

|
Ferdina and Malcolm came to New York from West Ghana seeking the "American Dream." But when they first arrived, that dream felt far away. With help from Room to Grow, the couple transitioned from living in shelters to their own apartment, gaining confidence and stability as they cared for their young son and daughter.
Ten years later, they shared their reflections at our recent Spring Gala. Faced with the choice to pay rent or buy a stroller and risk being evicted, the family credits Room to Grow with alleviating the burden of this impossible choice. "This was a life changing moment for us because we were able to provide for our child and remain in our home." Today, Ferdina is pursuing a master's degree, Malcolm is a restaurant manager, and both children are doing very well in elementary school.
