 5 Easy Pieces

Happy Summer (almost!) Once June gets here, it's summer to me regardless of what the calendar says. Part of what makes summer so appealing is how simple the dressing can be. When we were kids, it was kicking off the shoes, throwing on shorts, and running around outside all day long (doesn't sound half bad even now, actually.) While we definitely pay a bit more attention to our summer outfits than that, I don't think we need to over-complicate things. This month I'm sharing my favorite 5 Easy Pieces that will fit the bill for me this summer. You may want to adapt them for yourself or maybe these will spark some ideas of your own.

Just like this classic scene in the movie, "Five Easy Pieces", don't make things more difficult than they have to be. Use your imagination and have fun this summer!

5 EASY PIECES

Summertime...and the livin' is easy. At least it should be, when it comes to getting dressed. I've picked these favorites because they are easy to style...they're comfortable...they're versatile to dress up and down...and they're readily available, so if you decide to adopt them for yourself you won't have any problems finding them.

First is the white jean. I know, many of you may be saying 'duh!' But I also know that for many women (and men too) white jeans are just one more complication in purchasing jeans in general. The key to white jeans is getting them in a fabric that is not too thin (we don't want any see-through), then from there choosing the length and fit that works best for you. Whether cropped, boyfriend, skinny, straight or flared, they're all available. (Check out this handy shopping guide to start you in the right direction.)

What I love about white jeans is that they work for so many body types - you can wear a long flowy top if you want to cover your butt (on vacation, you can wear your lovely swimsuit coverup easily with white jeans, making it do double duty)...wearing white as a monochrome is both slimming and elegant (add a colored scarf or jewelry to draw the eye upward to your face)...add a dark or brightly colored top to (again) draw attention upward...and nude shoes are great because they don't break the line, and they elongate the legs. Don't forget to wear nude (not white) underwear.

A maxi skirt or dress is an absolute must for me in summer. Looks great with an off the shoulder top and heels for dinner (if it's a dress - you can layer another sexy top on top of it for more versatility.) Pair it with a denim jacket and flats (or sandals or sneakers) and it works great for daytime running around or sightseeing on vacation. Here's my recent travel packing plan for our (almost) Italy trip - I was going to pair up that skirt in so many ways. The good news is that it works equally well on vacation or sta-cation.

These days I find I love popping on a hat for just about any occasion - shopping, errands, festivals, whatever. There are so many affordable selections in so many styles and colors - you're sure to find one that suits you. (The one in the collection above is one of my favorite basics.) Plus they're great for bad hair days - who can't use a little help there once in a while?

Boyfriend jeans have become a 'go-to' for me for summer. First of all, they're comfortable because of their looser fit. They also dress up or down very easily - I love wearing them with heels as much as flats or sneakers.

The aforementioned jean jacket is a decided plus for summer - whether in classic denim or white. It can take an outfit from dressy to casual in an instant, and just adds an element of 'cool' when layered over tees, flowing blouses, or your maxi skirt/dress. I've taken to wearing a white jean vest as well, which I'm loving.

I don't really like using myself as a model, but since I encourage my clients and friends to share their photos with me, I guess I have to do it too once in a while. So here's a photo I took recently combining the last three of my five easy pieces for summer. I hope you're inspired to play around with these as well. (As always - I'd love to see your selfies!)

This N'That

These aren't your mother's sneakers! Thank goodness we have
more choices today when it comes to our sneakers.
There's no need to be boring - here are some fav's I recently wrote about.

As usual, photographer Bill Cunningham has his pulse on what's
really happening on the streets, of New York at least, which
is pretty much style-central of the country. Love it when
he turns his focus to the guys!

Since the white tee is also a staple for summer - actually year round -
it's fun to get ideas for styling it from the stars.
(Love how Beyonce has done the white monochrome look!)
