STYLE BULLETIN

Spring 2015

Decide For Yourself

I'm cutting myself a little slack by calling this my Spring newsletter. Since March is almost over but it's not yet April, I figured the all-encompassing 'Spring' would cover this issue quite nicely. It's even more appropriate because I'm reviewing the Spring trends for you in this newsletter. As I write this we're having a few days of nice warm weather, which always puts me in the mood to pack away the winter clothes and bring out the sandals. But Mother Nature can be fickle, as we all know, so there may still be some cool days ahead of us. My advice is don't pack everything away just yet - only your heaviest items - but bring out your Spring wardrobe and take a look at what you might need/want to supplement or replace this year.

Enjoy this overview of the trends of the season, but more importantly, decide what works for you and what doesn't. What your best friend or the sales person loves isn't necessarily the right choice for you. We're fortunate because this season does have lots of choices: in pants (wide-legged to skinny, they are all available), hem lengths (again, all over the place) and color (pastels to brights, with denim taking center stage.)  If you need a little help pulling your Spring wardrobe together, let me know. I'm happy to help!

SPRING TRENDS
Decide For Yourself

Let's start our trends discussion with a stand-out trend of the season: denim, denim, and more denim. While denim has been a wardrobe staple for decades now, it's popularity has surged in the form of denim shirtdresses, wearing denim with denim, and flared denim jeans (part of the retro trend of the season).  Those of us who were around when the denim craze began may not wish to embrace all of the current components, but that's a personal preference. (You might enjoy reading my recent blog on denim that stemmed a note I found from my college-days '70's. It certainly brought back memories.)

Of course, white denim is always on trend for the warmer months (key tips for white denim: make sure it's got some heft, for the 'non-see-through' factor and always wear nude - not white - underwear.)

Two trends - flared legs and high-waists - are seen in both denim and non-denim pants. I can just see some of you out there, jumping up and down with joy at the prospect of finding pants with a longer rise.

Some of the other trends to consider are fringe (part of the retro trend I mentioned)...the stacked heel (will look great with a flared pant)... suede (I recommend lighter colors, in keeping with the season)... the soft trench... florals (to quote Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, "Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking!") You can go all directions with florals this season, from romantic to bold.

Besides florals, you'll also be seeing lots of graphic prints, as well as gingham - not everyone's cup of tea I admit. It is, however, rather interesting when worn as Taylor Swift does above, taking it in a small dose in a ladylike style rather than in a country casual look.

The gladiator sandal is still around, with long wrappings up the leg... the bucket bag is popular in handbags... and you'll be seeing a wide range of color options, from pastel blues and pinks to brights to the perennial black-and-white.

Do any of these trend 'speak' to you? I'd love to know which ones!
As always, if you are in need of some help sorting it all out,
please do let me know.
I'm happy to help.

This N'That

If you decide to embrace prints,  you might want to try a printed pant. Don't cringe! There are all kinds of innovative ways to style it to flatter your lower half.

I always like to find a little something for the guys, and the He Spoke Style blog is a great resource. This is a great tutorial on how to fold an oversize
pocket square (one of my favorite looks with a sport coat or suit!)

If you're in Spring-cleaning mode (I know I am), don't overlook
one very important area: your make-up bag and drawer. It's
easy to let things accumulate, and not always
a safe thing to do, from a bacterial perspective.
Here's a quick guide for you. I also wrote about the subject here.

A GIFT CERTIFICATE IS THE PERFECT GIFT TO GIVE AND TO RECEIVE.

I'm happy to provide gift certificates that can be used for closet clean-ups, wardrobe consultations, or personal shopping - whatever the recipient would like. Please keep this in mind for your loved ones (even if that loved one is you!)

I was thrilled to be able to attend a reception for a very talented client of mine who was being featured in a local art show. I've seen her work at her home many times and have much admired it, so it was a pleasure to see others also enjoying her talent. The show dates have been extended; it is running through April 6 at the Twin Pines Art Center in Belmont if you'd like to stop in to take a peek.

All my best to all of you!
