Style Mantras

As we move into the big holiday weeks, even while we're making our celebratory plans our minds can't help but wander into the coming year. Most of us make some form of resolution that we plan to implement into our lives - even if that resolution is to not put so much stress on ourselves with unnecessary resolutions. I always find the new year to be a good time to take an overall look at the unnecessary, or outdated, 'baggage' I might have saddled myself with during the year and to figure out what I need to do to streamline my life as much as possible, and to be true to who I am now.

This, of course, applies to my style philosophy as well, because I find that it also makes subtle shifts from year to year. You might want to start to take a few moments in any quiet time you might have over the holidays (yes, really!) to think about your style 'mantra' and examine what, if anything, might have altered during the year. What changes might you want to make in the coming year that will help you express a more ideal outer reflection of the inner you?

Enjoy all the special moments in these final few weeks of the year. I'll look forward to talking with you in 2015.

Happy styling!

STYLE MANTRAS

What best reflects your style philosophy?
Maybe one of these quotes will spark or inspire you...
or maybe you'll develop your own mantra
to guide you throughout the year.

The best color in the whole world is the one that looks good, on you!

Coco Chanel

Do you need to modify your color scheme to more accurately enhance your hair, eyes and skin? Perhaps you want to dress more colorfully or, conversely, in a more neutral palette. Color creates a mood and your color palette should make you feel happy every day.

The only rule is don't be boring and dress cute wherever you go.

Life is too short to blend in.

Paris Hilton

Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.

Cecil Beaton

Are you ready to take more fashion 'risks' than in the past? This doesn't require you to implement a 'shock factor' into your style, but can be accomplished through smaller changes if that is more your comfort level. For inspiration, visit the Advanced Style or The Sartorialist photo-blogs.

I never say 'never' and I never say 'always.'

Grace Kelly

Are you ready to play around a little bit with some looks you've never tried before? If you think you've gotten into a style rut, next time you're in the store, why not try on some things you've never considered in the past? After all, it's only clothes! At the worse, you might have a good laugh. At the best, you might find something new and interesting to add into the mix.

I like my money right where I can see it - hanging in my closet.

Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City

Actually, this isn't a mantra I would advise, but there is a nugget in there. If your wardrobe isn't working for you, perhaps it's because you haven't invested the appropriate time or resources to make it more functional and/or more representative of what and who you are. Is it time that you invested a bit more in you?

There's nothing interesting about looking perfect - you

lose the point. You want what you're wearing

to say something about you, about who you are.

Emma Watson

These quotes really cut to the heart of the matter. Because our appearance speaks volumes about us before we ever utter a word, make sure yours is telling your truth.  If it's telling who you were a decade ago, it's definitely time for some examination. Likewise, if you're just copying what's on the store mannequin without adding in your special, personal touch to make it 'yours', then your 'perfection' doesn't tell about who you are. These can be difficult areas to address, so if you'd like to work it through, please let me know. It's one of the most rewarding, inspirational parts of my profession and can be truly transformational.

If you wear things you adore, you just look better.

Margherita Missoni

There's no reason to wear things you don't absolutely love. Not just 'like' or are 'okay'. If you're not in love with everything in your closet, then it's time to cut those ho-hum items loose. When you love everything in your closet, it makes getting dressed so much easier. Maybe this year is the year of the 'purge'!

If you'd like a little help defining and refining
your personal style mantra, let me know.
I'd love to help!

This N'That
I came across this article which I shared on Facebook that illustrates how clothing can add years to your look or take them off. We know this, of course, but seeing is believing and this is an excellent demonstration.

I love Christmas music and tend to overdose on it during the season.
If you love it too, you might enjoy this top-ten list of modern Christmas songs.
Do you have any to add?
Ronettes; 7x7
Here's a little preview of the 2015 Color of the Year - Marsala. At first glance,
it may not look like it's a color that will work with many color palettes, but
you might be surprised. It may not be one of 'your' colors, but if you love it,
we look at working it into your accessories. Might be appropriate to discuss over a glass of wine?
