Break Out!

Greetings!

Aren't we great creatures of habit? Experts at doing things in the same ways, over and over again? Don't get me wrong, most of the time habits are terrific - they free us up from having to constantly rethink the things we do on a daily basis. It's only when they turn into ruts that they hold us back from being our very best selves. One of the most common requests I get from clients is to help them put together outfits. This is because we all (myself included sometimes) are used to pairing up certain items in our wardrobes in certain ways.  Maybe it's what the sales person in the store suggested, or maybe it's what you saw on the mannequin in the store, but whatever the reason, you're not able to get past the one or two combinations that you always reach for when it comes to certain (or maybe all?) items of clothing.

I find that providing examples is most helpful when encouraging clients to break out of their styling ruts. When we work in the closet, for those who have trouble remembering what we've done, often we'll take pictures and save them in a handy app called Cloth so they can refer back to them.

In this month's newsletter, I'm sharing a few examples of how to mix up a few popular Fall/Winter items to hopefully spark your imagination. Maybe you'll want to get into your closet and start mixing and matching and creating some new combinations that you wouldn't have tried before. (Obviously, if you'd like some help with this, please email or call and we'll get an appointment set up to get you started.) The change of seasons is a great time to play around with outfits, since we're in the process of moving into our cooler seasonal wear, so get in there and have some fun. (If you'd like to share some photos with me of new outfits you've put together, I'd love to see them!)

Happy styling!

BREAK OUT!

Let's look at a few ways you can break out of the tried-and-true and move into new pairings in your everyday wardrobe.  Not all of these will be everyone's taste, but perhaps they'll spark some ideas that will fit into your own personal style.

To start with, most of us have a pair of knee boots in our closet, which are a great staple for this season.  If you've been wearing them only in your casual styles, maybe you'll want to make them work a little harder for you this year. They work great with dresses and skirts, especially when paired with tights or dark stockings (for those of us who want more coverage and/or depending on the occasion).

Most of us have a silk blouse or two in our closets. They can be a very versatile wardrobe basic - as easily worn in the casual environment as the professional. Try them with your jeans and boots - maybe with your leather moto jacket or vest to toughen up the look at little, if that's your style. The contrast of the soft and hard (silk with leather boots and/or jacket) is what makes a look visually interesting - when you take an item out of its 'expected' genre.

The black or dark-wash jean is another year-round favorite, one that can cross over into so many areas of your life if given the chance. Depending on your profession, they can even go to work with you. I especially love pairing black jeans with heels and a feminine top for going out to dinner.

A classic Fall trend is the plaid shirt, one we're definitely seeing in abundance in the stores this year. This may or may not be something you think you can wear, but again, we're talking about thinking outside the box so give these options some consideration. You don't have to look like a lumberjack when wearing plaid - add some dangly earrings and some fun shoes and it takes the look in a whole different direction.

If you're ready to 'break out' this season,
please give me a call.
I'd love to help!

This N'That
Okay - I don't know about you but I'm just not ready to see Christmas decorations in the stores before Halloween.  I especially enjoy the build up to Halloween, even though we don't get dressed in costumes ourselves. (Actually, that's not totally true - I usually doff my fabulous witch hat, just because it's so much fun to wear.) Maybe this year I'll opt for some cute, understated nail art to go with it. If you're interested in ideas for yourself or the young girls in your life, this category on Pinterest is filled with ideas.

Iris Apfel, 93, is a style icon that never ceases to inspire. She's the subject of a documentary appearing at the New York Film Festival this week, and is a perfect example of how to 'break out' in your own personal way. Take a peek into her colorful, signature style...

After reading this article in the Huffington Post about exercise wear throughout the years, I have to say that I'm very happy to be living in this time and place. (Although I did take part in the Jane Fonda-leg-warmers-and-leotard phase, I have to admit.) You have to give those women credit, however, for "just doing it" in what had to be very uncomfortable clothing.  An interesting read...

We talk about 'breaking out' in this newsletter as it pertains to our individual style, which is admittedly very personally focused. We're not pretending to solve world problems here, but rather to help ourselves maintain a very positive self-image which then translates into positive energy flowing out into our everyday lives and the people we touch in our little corners of the world.

There are those, however, who have spoken out at grave personal risk to stand up for those women who cannot speak or stand up for themselves.  Congratulations to Malala Yousafzai who is the youngest person, at age 17, to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. You are truly an inspiration to us all.
