The In-Between Season

While one could argue that those of us here in Northern California live most of the time in an 'in-between' season, there does come a time when you look in your closet and you just aren't inspired.  You're tired of wearing your winter wardrobe, and besides, the days are lighter longer and you're just ready to change things up. Not to worry - I've got a few tips here to help you get that inspiration and spring in your step when you get ready in the morning.

The In-Between Season
(Getting Inspired!)

It's all an illusion...that is,
showing an illusion of more skin.

*Layer a long-sleeved sheer top over a camisole, maybe adding in a lighter colored cardigan for warmth if you need it.

*Instead of crew necks or turtlenecks, choose a scoop or v-necked tee or sweater.

*Show off your bare ankles by cuffing your skinny jeans and wearing flats, some great heels, or perhaps an ankle bootie.

Donna Karan "The Nudes" Toeless Hosiery

*Swap out your dark-colored tights for colored ones (if you're brave) or replace them with nude fishnets or open-weave, patterned hosiery.  Whether it's age-related or weather- or occasion-related, sometimes you need something on those bare legs. (By the way, I did a little video on tights and legwear earlier in the year - you can check it out here.)

I love nude fishnets - they provide just a little coverage and they aren't in-your-face with the weave. In fact, I just came across a highly recommended fishnet from Spanx; DKNY also carries a lower priced version you might want to try.

For later in the season, I'm recommending toe-less sheers (like these from Donna Karan), so you can have a little coverage, even with open-toed shoes.

If you click on the links above you'll notice I'm using a website called Bare Necessities - you may want to check them out a bit more because they have a great selection (even Wolford), plus they carry bras for the larger-busted woman as well as swimwear and men's selections.

Transition your shoes.

*Stow away the knee-high boots and opt for ankle boots or booties. (I've got a blogpost coming out on proper storage of boots very soon. You can follow my blog here.)

*On warmer days, wear flats or oxfords.

*Instead of black or dark brown shoes or booties, why not try light tan or gray or metallics?

Lighten and brighten up.

*Start wearing layering pieces that are in your lightest shades of neutral.

*Try a lighter colored jean or pant; the same with your jackets - start working your lighter colored jackets into the rotation, including your denim jacket.

*Brighten up your face by switching to lighter shadows, lipsticks and perhaps blush. Now is a great time to lighten up your nail and toe polish.

*It's definitely a great time to change your handbag to a brighter or lighter shade - maybe even a metallic.

*Your jewelry can reflect the season as well - try some lucite and crystals, or bright beads combined with lighter silvers and golds, or some lacy chandelier earrings.

Turn down the volume.

*Put away the cowl necks and heavy, textured knits. Instead, go for the finer weight cottons, cashmere or merino wool.

*Lighter weight scarves in cotton or silk will look fresher than heavy wools or knits.  You can still loop them around your neck if you need warmth but they'll not overwhelm.

*Bring out the trench coat instead of your heavier wool coat.  If you are still battling cold temps, consider a wool coat in a lighter color.

Sometimes the in-between season lasts quite a while,
either because of weather issues or just
our own body temperature fluctuations.
Let me know if I can help you
put together some outfits to help you manage the 'tween' season.

Here's a great article that has been floating around the web.
It would be a lovely one to share with all the young women you know
who are having anxiety about their size.  Or let's face it,
all of us too - no matter our age - because we are
always comparing ourselves to others. I think you'll enjoy it!

My Inspiration Board

Since we're talking about getting re-inspired with your wardrobe, I thought you might like to see my own 'inspiration board'.  I recently wrote a blog about it because I wanted to encourage others to take a look at the items they surround themselves with every day and take inspiration from, and then make their own collage.  You can read about it here...
and if it feels right, I hope you'll share it with me.

All my best to all of you!
