The Times They Are a Changin'

The times will soon be changing - literally. We'll move from daylight savings time to 'regular' time in early November. I don't know about you but it's always a jolt when that happens - the days seem to get so short so quickly. Sometimes it can even be a bit depressing as we adjust to less daylight hours and cooler temperatures. Besides that, almost everyone I know is saying "OMG - I can't believe it's October already! Where did the year go?" This is a time of year when we need to give ourselves a little more TLC, as we get ready to head into the hectic holiday months. Let's take a deep breath, give ourselves a little pampering and embrace the change. We'll have a few suggestions for the wardrobe but we're going a bit beyond - hopefully you'll find some nuggets to elevate your mood as well as your style.

The Times They Are a Changin'
Here are some of my sure-fire, feel-good tips to ease you into the shorter days and cooler temps. They'll lift you up if your spirits are down. And of course, you'll do it in your own lovely style!
Bring out the lucky charms...you know you've got some. Maybe it's a special bracelet or scarf from your best friend. Or an heirloom you received from your grandmother. Or maybe it's just something that makes your eyes light up every time you see it. This is the perfect time of year to bring it out and incorporate it into your every day - even if it's when you're hanging out at night watching television or reading. These 'touchstones' add warmth and strength to your life.
Not feeling so well? Be sure to dress well. It seems this time of year is when seasonal allergies flare up, and colds and flu are being passed around (got your flu shot, everyone?) If you get stricken (as I recently was with the whole allergy thing) you may not feel like making the effort, but that's especially when you should do it. When you take care to dress for the day, it shows and it can be an ego booster. For example, even if you're just running to the grocery - and this is one of my favorites - loop a scarf around your neck for a little pizzazz. Put on a little blush and lipstick. It only takes a few seconds and will do wonders for your spirit.
I recently wrote a series of blogs on "Quick Changes to Add Sizzle" to your look. Check them out here...here...and here. Another one I love for this time of year is wearing color tights and textured hosiery. I guarantee these will boost your confidence and your mood! (In fact, the "Quick Change"series is continuing, so if you want to get the additional tips, you can sign up for my blog when you visit one of the posts listed.)
Amp Up Your Comfort Clothes. Your comfort clothes encompass two areas - the clothes you lounge around in at home, and the fabrics that you most love wearing, whether at home or when you're out and about. By lounging at home, I don't mean when you're actually doing something physical, such as washing the car or working in the garden. I mean 'lounging' - curled up on the couch reading or watching movies, etc. Your loungewear should make you feel cozy, cuddled and luxurious. If your robe, slippers, and tops/bottoms are tired, threadbare, or stained, it's time to toss them and replace them with ones that will make you feel divine (and they don't have to be expensive to do that for you.) Make sure they're in a fabric you love, in a color that makes your skin glow.
When it comes to comfort fabrics, this season is the perfect time to wear those fabrics that feel fabulous on your skin. What makes you feel great? Is it silk? Cashmere? Super soft cotton? Wear them every day - maybe layering for those days that progress from cool to warm to cool again.
Order Please! We all tend to spend more time in our homes in the Fall/Winter season, and nothing can make you a little bit crazy(ier?) than being surrounded by disorder. So much is out of our control in the outside world that it helps to create order in your corner of the universe. Even if it's just cleaning out the sock drawer, or filing away that stack of papers, or or maybe you'll want to do a full-on closet reorganization. Whatever it is that gets in the way of you enjoying your indoor hours - tackle it one project at a time so that you can enjoy both a sense of accomplishment, as well as a beautiful environment. (Let me know if you need help with any of this - whether it's your closet or other areas in your home.)
"Wanna get away?" Bring the spa home! Take a look at where you spend the most time in your home and turn it into the most serene place in your home. If that's not possible because of your family's needs, then carve out a niche for yourself. Burn your favorite aromatherapy candle...add a bouquet of fresh flowers...create a playlist of favorite songs...put out pictures of people you love and frame quotes that inspire you...try a new, lovely scented body lotion. This is a great season to snuggle in and pamper yourself - you may like it so much it'll become a year-round ritual!

This N'That

The private, docent-led tour of the Bulgari exhibit at the DeYoung Museum on November 13 organized by the professional organization that I belong to (AICI SFBA) is filling up - we only have 20 spots available, so if you had a thought to attend, now is the time to register. Only $20 for museum members and $35 for non-members. It really is so cool to not have to fight the crowds, and be able to get up close to the exhibit. Don't miss out! Just sayin'...Love this quote shared by colleague, Brenda Kinsel. True words indeed - if it doesn't fit properly, tailor it or toss it!
"There isn't one woman over forty who doesn't believe black makes her look thinner. Good luck with that because if your black clothes are oversized, boxy, shapeless, too tight, too short, or too shiny ... they won't work for you now. This doesn't mean stop wearing so much black. It still makes us feel sophisticated, glam and cool."

If you love a girls day out, why not try high tea in support of breast cancer research? "Pink Tea Under the Dome" will be held every Sunday in October from 2-4 at the Westfield Shopping Centre in San Francisco. And it's so reasonable too - only $30. Of course, if want to add in a little shopping before and after, it could add up to a bit more, but that's a girl's perogative, right?

"Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world.
For, indeed, that's all who ever have."

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, it's a good time to make a little extra effort to support those organizations that are researching this disease that has affected so many of our friends and families. Even a small contribution means a lot - a number of companies feature products in October that we use in our every day lives and donate a portion (some up to 100%) of the proceeds to breast cancer organizations. All my best to all of you!
