The truth is, ror the most part, unless they're heavily involved in the fashion world as their business, most people just want to know how they can stay current and look relevant from season to season. Here are my thoughts on the Fall trends and some ideas on how to make them work.
First of all - color - the one trend that most people ask about. This chart shows the current trends of the season and you can see there are lots to choose from.
What you'll see a lot of in the stores are lots of saturated colors (especially red and blue), plus (interestingly) pale pink, which is not shown on the chart, plus olive green, and many shades of gray (not 50 though! lol).
How to work it: The cardinal rule about color is that if it is one of 'your' colors, you can wear it lightly or from head-to-toe. If a trendy color isn't one of 'yours', you'll want to use it as an accent color and preferably not near your face; you'll probably not want to invest a lot of money either on items in colors that aren't your best colors. But if a color looks great on you, why not try it in a coat this year? The coat is a point of focus this season in a variety of shapes (from oversized to leather motocross to structural); it's available in many colors, and you can find it with lovely embellishments (like fur, feathers, embroidery) if that suits your style and taste. This might be a great year to invest in an outerwear garment in something other than your basic neutrals. Remember - if a color is one that you look great in, it can serve as a 'neutral' for you.
Trend: Plaids and tweeds
How to work it:
Plaids can be a bit tricky because you can easily start to look like a lumberjack or a prep-schooler. If you're loving this trend, the best bet is to incorporate plaid into your accessories - perhaps some pumps or a clutch-purse. If you plan on wearing plaid, keep it to one item and use one of the colors in the print as the primary color to pair with it.
Tweeds/the menswear-look are really prevalent this season. They are ideal for the corporate world because they look so professional. If you don't want to go all-out with a suit, perhaps try a jacket or pants that you can wear with your other suiting items. If you love tweed, this is the year to stock up on it because we don't see it every year.
Trend: Leather everywhere
How to work it: Because leather (and faux leather) is literally everywhere, from trim to side panels to full-on all-leather dresses, this is a good year to stock up on your leather goods. If you're a leather-lite kind of person, try a dress or top with a bit of leather trim. If you're loving leather, maybe you'll want a leather-paneled dress or pants (and, again, the motocross jacket.) I don't recommend wearing leather head-to-toe unless you're a rock star, a model, or an actual biker, but this is definitely the year to take advantage of the many presentations in leather.
Trend: Modest dresses

How to work it: We haven't seen this trend in quite some time (perhaps it's the the Duchess of Cambridge we should thank for bringing it back?), so if you've been yearning for a dress that will reach your knees, possibly with sleeves, that has exquisite detailing and is well fitted - this is the year! You can keep it conservative by wearing it with pumps, but you can also kick up the edge-factor by wearing it with booties.
Perennial Trends: These are the trends that seem to show up every year and are worth a bit more investment. You know what they are...
*Black and White
*Animal print
Classics: I've already mentioned a couple of these - we're seeing them in a variety of colors, so if they suit your taste and style, it's a good time to stock up.
*Motocross jacket and/or vest
*Tweeds
*Loafers - in tweeds, leathers, in ladylike styling or menswear looks.
*Handle bags
I'm sure some of these trends are living in your closet right now.
Let me know if you need some help to make them work!
