How Do You Trend?

Even while many people are already getting geared up for back-to-school shopping, I'm looking forward to our annual family vacation at the beach, which starts this week. In this business of fashion and image, we've been looking at Fall trends for some time now, and it's difficult not to jump right into it.  And of course, that big fat September issue of Vogue will be showing up soon (wonder how many pages it will be this year?)

But I'm holding on to the last bit of summer while I can...anticipating a good beach read (or two)...and playing with the family's newest member, our almost-one-year-old great nephew.  There will be plenty of time to talk trends in September, but in the meantime why not take my little quiz and see what trend type you are? It may give you a clue as to how you want to approach your Fall shopping, but we'll leave actual trend talk until September.

Enjoy these last days of summer - happy August!

How Do You Trend?

September Issue 2012

Take this little quiz to see which kind of 'trender' you are:

1. Speaking of that big fat September issue of
Vogue, when you see it do you...
a.  Turn away quickly - don't even look at it!
b.  Leave it lying around for a couple of weeks, then eventually pick it up to thumb through.
c.  Open it up right away and leaf through it, marking the pages of trends that resonate with you.
d.  Meet the mailman at the mailbox to snatch it out of his hand. Finally it's here - let's see what got selected from all those runway shows I watched!

2.  When you hear the dates of Fashion Week in September, do you...
a.  What's "Fashion Week'?
b.  Think it sounds like fun and look forward to reading about the Spring trends in the magazines.
c.  Follow the runway shows of your favorite designers so you can be informed of what will be available in stores next season that might work for you.
d.  Book a plane ticket to New York, reserve your hotel room, and start 'working' your contacts to get tickets to the hottest shows.

3.  When Refinery 29 announces they have a new look for their newsletter/blog, do you...
a. Wonder why a refinery would be blogging?
b. Look forward to checking it out when you get the next issue in your inbox.
c. Click over immediately to their website and start looking for articles that resonate with your particular style/shopping venues.
d.  No big news  - you're one of their contributors!

Okay - now the results.

If you had mostly a's - you're the Fashion Resistant.

Fashion just isn't an interest of yours. As long as you've got something clean to wear every day, you're fine. Besides you're just too busy to go through your closet to see what you might need, let alone go shopping for it.

What does it mean? Don't worry about it! Bring in an advisor (a fashion-savvy, honest friend or better yet, a wardrobe consultant) to take a good look at your wardrobe and pull out what's tired, ill-fitting or in disrepair, and then make a list of replacement items. A wardrobe consultant can even take care of the shopping for you.  Keep your basics in good shape, updating silhouettes/shades/sizes as necessary so that you always have clothes that fit properly and suit your lifestyle.  Do this at least once a year - it's a no muss, no fuss way to make sure you always look your best with minimal effort on your part.

If you had mostly b's - you're the Fashion Curious.
You find fashion trends overwhelming but you do like to add in a trend or two that feel comfortable to you. You want to keep up with the times and look current, but you want to spend your money wisely.

What does it mean?  You'll feel most secure incorporating elements of the trends that are more classic - those items that will tend to stand the test of time.  You'll want one or two trends at most, and they will need to be in your most flattering colors so they work solidly with the rest of your wardrobe over a longer period of time.

If you had mostly c's - you're the Fashion Savvy.
You love putting together new looks and having fun with fashion.  You absolutely love updating your look each season and have a strong sense of what you like and don't like...what works for you and what doesn't.

What does it mean?  You're willing to be more edgy in your choices - willing to incorporate an eye-catching item or two. Compile your list of 'must haves' early in the season, staying true to what works with your body and your unique style. Snatch them up at 'pre-season' sales or at least early in the season to ensure you can find them before stock is depleted.

If you had mostly d's - you're the Fashion Renegade.
You love style for style's sake. You always look interesting and aren't afraid of taking risks.  Your look can be overwhelming to others but not only doesn't it bother you, you almost always can pull it off beautifully. You'll incorporate the most outrageous of the trends - knowing that they will likely be 'here today - gone tomorrow' - but that suits you just fine.

What does it mean?  You probably won't have much difficulty in locating your selected trends because there isn't as much competition at this level of trending. But, as one of the fashion-forward crowd you will, of course, have your items purchased early in the season so you can lead the way.  The super-smart Fashion Renegade has her favorite consignment or Ebay store on speed-dial so she can quickly recycle those items she doesn't choose to keep as part of her collection.

Okay - which one are you?  You might find you share elements
of a couple of these.

In my September issue, I'll share my top trends of the season
and show you how they might work in each of these categories.
Stay tuned...

Friends and colleagues (and husband - doesn't he look dapper?! One colleague, who didn't know him, said she thought he was a designer. Woot!) joined in a lovely evening to install the new slate of officers and then to hear a presentation by Project Runway finalist, Melissa Fleis.  It was such a fun evening - if you want to get a flavor of what happened, enjoy the little video montage below.
