Banish the Poolside Jitters

Whatever your plans for this month,
*whether an exotic vacation or a relaxing stay-cation...
*between the weddings, college visitations, summer camps, and visits from the kids and grandkids...
*while you're enjoying the baseball games, golf outings, trips to the beach...

remember what a glorious nation we live in (yes, flaws and all.)  We'll be celebrating with friends at a BBQ (and pool party - I'll be taking my own advice from this month's newsletter so I can relax and enjoy myself by the pool.), doing that most American of activities: participating in a bocce ball tournament.  (LOL - true!)   Wish us luck at the tourney, and have a very happy July!

Banish the Poolside Jitters

It's probably fairly safe to assume that you'll be looking at going to the pool or the beach or a backyard BBQ/pool party at some point this summer.  And if you're like most of us, most of us women at least, it's also fairly safe to assume that you'll experience a degree of angst in deciding what to wear.  Even the most confident of women seems to get an attack of the nerves when it comes to this subject.  Let's banish those jitters right now with a few confidence-building tips!

First of all, if you're in the market for a new swimsuit and/or cover-up...  (and if you haven't taken stock of your suit(s) and cover-ups from last year, now would be a good time to do it, while there are still some choices left in the stores), you obviously want to pick a suit that will bring out your inherent beauty.

To do that, take a look in your closet and make note of the predominant colors, and which of those colors generate the most compliments when you wear them.  Those are good colors to remember and focus on when you get to the store. To even the most veteran of shoppers it can sometimes be overwhelming,  seeing all the racks of suits and cover-ups in every color and print imaginable. Making notes ahead of time about the colors you are focusing on can make the process less confusing.

Besides those colors that get you compliments, focus on prints or colors that complement your eye, skin or hair colors.  These are colors that will instantly make you feel more attractive.

There are many sites that can guide you in selecting a swimsuit for your body type.  You may want to check out my recent blog post on  this one from Refinery 29.  (P.S. You can also call me for some help if you'd like the personal touch!)

Speaking of prints
, give yourself permission to wear a bold print; if not in your suit, then try one in a cute cover-up or sundress. There are always lots of florals available, but maybe you'll find one in a great graphic or animal print. If you opt for a print swimsuit, many of these can double for casual dining, just by tossing on a pareo or long skirt.  Solid colors can be very elegant, but it's also fun to have a print just to mix things up.  Let yourself think outside the box!

Cover-ups do double-duty
. While they serve their basic purpose when worn over your suit, they also work beautifully if you have no intention of going in the pool, or when you're ready to transition from pool-time to dinner-time. Wear one over white jeans or capris and you're instantly festive.

Make a bold move.
If you're opting for a neutral palette, add one colorful, bold accessory.  Maybe it's a hat, or a gauzy scarf (check out this animated tutorial on 5 ways to tie scarves for the summer), or some embellished or metallic sandals or wedges.

Finish Your Look
.  Don't forget the little extra's that will make you look movie-star glamorous.  Oversized sunglasses and a tote give you presence.  Maybe try a dramatic, colored pair of sunglasses for a change of pace.

Add in a few body-wise moves
that will help you look like you've been on a cruise, even if it's your first day out in the sun for the past few months. Most of us don't have flawless skin, but it's amazing what a (fake) tan and a bit of shimmer can do to conceal and even-out the rough and discolored areas that, unfortunately, just tend to pop up over the years.

The first step is a spray tan, whether self-applied or professionally done.  My favorite professional spray tan is the VersaSpa - it doesn't have an odd smell and it dries evenly.  You'll want to schedule this a couple of days prior to your event so the tan has time to develop.  For a self-applied product, friends recommend Fake Bake - I haven't tried it yet but from what I've seen it gives a beautiful, even glow.  I've also recently been using a daily lotion with tanner from Jergens that I just love (especially the price!) It helps you maintain a nice even color, with no icky odor.  (I've put together a few of my favorite summer products below in case you'd like to check them out.)

Add a bit of shimmer to the outside of your arms, on the front of your legs, perhaps your collarbone or decolletage...a bit of sheen is slimming and glamorous. (Don't go overboard, though - you don't want to look like a swimsuit model - well, maybe you do - but you want to glow, not shine!)

1.  Jergen's Natural Glow,  Daily moisturizer/firmer/tanner. Only $10!
2.  Nars Illuminator in Orgasm. A little bit adds a subtle sheen to your arms, legs and even cheeks. $30.00 (A bit pricier than drugstore brands, but it lasts forever!)
3.  LaRoche Posay Anthelios sunscreen - a favorite from Europe, now available in drugstores in the U.S. $32.50 (Again, a bit pricier than some others, but it also lasts forever and is great for the face.)

June wraps up my year as President of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Association of Image Consultants International (AICI-SFBA). It's been a wonderfully rewarding year. I've gotten to know more of my fellow consultants from around the globe (the picture above is from our recent International Conference in Arizona) and, even more, have truly realized the great resource and support we provide to one another.  This profession is largely one where we work 'solo', out of our home offices.  It's gratifying to be able to connect with others who not only understand the challenges of working alone, but also who understand the great service we provide to women (and men) who also feel alone in their frustrations and worries about their wardrobe and appearance. (I mean, aren't the 'poolside jitters' just a perfect example of one of our common 'issues'?!) Helping our clients develop and maintain a strong self-image, manage their wardrobes for maximum return on their dollar, and step out every day with confidence and enthusiasm are just a few of the joys of this profession.

One of the other joys is just the pure 'girlie' fun of fashion.  At our Installation of officers on July 17, where I will officially hand over the gavel, we will follow-up with a great program on the 2nd floor of Bloomingdale's in the City.  Project Runway Season 10 finalist, Melissa Fleis, will talk to us about her experiences on the show, as well as all the great new things she's up to as she lives and works in San Francisco.  Limited tickets are available for this portion of the program - and at only $45 per person - you'll want to get your reservation in now if you want to attend.  I know you won't be disappointed!
