Spring Trend Talk

Greetings!

I don't know about you but I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the idea that I should be thinking of Spring. I'm still enjoying wearing my knee boots! But when I see the daffodils in my front yard in bloom, along with the cherry blossom trees, etc., I'm forced to say that Spring has definitely sprung. (For those of you still battling extremely cold temps and snow, maybe a little talk of Spring will perk you up!)

Clearly, the stores are stocked and the fashion mags have all been talking Spring for some time, so this month I'll share with you what I believe are the most interesting trends of the season. I always advise that if you see a trend that you definitely want to embrace, do your shopping early (now), so that you'll be assured of finding a good selection. If it's a trend that you think you'll want to hang on to for years to come (and there are perennial trends), then you may want to invest in a higher quality item. If it's a 'one and done' trend for you, then don't spend lots of money on something you're probably not going to carry forward.

Happy March!

Amazing Lace

We're seeing lace everywhere - blouses, skirts and dresses - and in so many vibrant colors. This trend is interesting because it takes lace from the typical white, ivory and black and moves it into a much more modern vibe. You can still wear it in full 'ladylike' fashion with kitten heels if that's your preference or if the occasion calls for it, but you can also have some fun and mix it up with a leather jacket and booties, or with a tee and pumps.

Cut-Outs & Mesh
Besides lace, cut-outs and mesh are being seen in everything from shoes to bags to clothes.  I don't see this as a perennial trend but if you love it and can find an accessory at a reasonable price, it could be a statement-making seasonal add-in.

Warm-Weather Leather

Feather-light leather is very popular this season, and works so well in our mild Bay Area climate. Tunic tops, skirts and, of course, jackets are abundant, as are pieces that combine leather with other fabrics, such as ponte knit and even sheers.  I suggest you shop carefully with leathers - be sure to purchase in one of your go-to colors (not necessarily a trend color of the season) - because this is an investment. Leather is a perennial trend!

Brights

Bright colors, especially orange and blue, are popping up all over. Of course, you're going to see emerald green (the color of the year) throughout the year as well. Try mixing classics (like navy, linen, tan) with these beautiful brights for a fresh, new look, or combine them in a column of color.  Again, if you're going to embrace this trend in anything other than an accessory for a pop of color, make sure it's one of your colors.  Not everyone can wear these bright brights, and if you can't, you're in luck because we also are seeing ...

Lights

Lovely shades of sorbet are popular, whether in sweaters, jeans,  the light leather featured above, or just about anything really.  If this appeals to your sense of style, it's nice to know you have options.  And let's not forget...

Black and White

as another perennial trend,  featured with pops of the bright colors mentioned above. You'll also see a lot of stand-alone bright white this season, a look which works with so many different styles (elegant, bohemian, dramatic, feminine...) and carries forward into summer beautifully.

Steppin' Out
Shoe trends run the gamut this season...kitten heels make a return to the scene, as do lower, square-heeled pumps (nice for those who don't like or can't handle sky-high heels); gladiators are back as well, along with graphic and color-blocked heels and wedges.  There should be something for everyone in the shoe department this season.

Stripes

This seems to be a perennial trend for Spring/Summer, and anyone who's seen me lately (on the warmer days) knows that this is a favorite of mine.  Tee-shirts, jackets, even dresses and pants are showing up striped (although you have to be careful with those last two items because, as we know, stripes emphasize!)  One of my favorite looks is the striped blazer with pops of color.

Print It

Last but not least, whether it's graphics or Asians or florals, you won't have any problem finding a print to work this Spring. Remember to keep the scale of the print in proper proportion to your size - a large print can overwhelm a smaller body, while a tiny print loses its impact on a taller or larger frame.

I've certainly seen other trends talked about, such as denim, but really?  In my view, denim is a staple - a classic in the wardrobe.  While it's color, length, leg width, etc. may change from year to year, it's here to stay.  But that's just me!

If you need some help deciding which trends you want to work with this season, give me a call. I'd love to help!

This N'That

Both locations of Ruti and LaBelle Day Spas (Palo Alto and San Francisco) have partnered for a March special of 20% off. Check it out here!

There is still time to see the collection of paintings of the Dutch Golden Age at the DeYoung Museum, featuring Vermeer's Girl With a Pearl Earring through June 2. I put off getting my reservations, but now am scheduled to go twice. Can't get too much of a good thing!

"Spring is nature's way of saying, "Let's party!

Nature is just beginning the party outdoors, so go ahead and start the party inside in your closet.  Play with color - perhaps a statement handbag? Add in some stripes or prints (or maybe both together in a pattern combination). Try on some kitten heels or gladiators just for fun.  Take a look at nature for inspiration - even color-blocking is no obstacle. Let's get it started...!

All my best to all of you!
