Greetings!
Music and Arts Appreciation Sunday
Join us THIS SUNDAY, November 15th as we celebrate Metropolitan's very own Dove and Grammy Award Winner: Rev. Richard Smallwood. Rev. Smallwood will be the Preacher of the Hour for 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM Services.
Born in Atlanta Georgia and raised in Washington DC, Richard has been driven since childhood. His stepfather, CL Smallwood, founding pastor of the historic Union Temple Baptist Church and other churches all over the country was a tough taskmaster, and his mother Mabel encouraged his early love of music. The two extremes fueled his passion.
He began to play by ear at the age of five. By seven, he was taking formal lessons and by eleven had formed his own gospel group made up of neighborhood children. In junior high school, future pop icon Roberta Flack was one of his teachers and influenced him greatly. He graduated from the music major program at McKinley High School and entered Howard University majoring in piano performance and minoring in voice. Read more about Rev. Smallwood. . .

It's Time for Sunday School!
Week of November 15, 2015
From Derbe to Philippi
The church is on the move. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is spreading across nations; continents. It is through missions efforts large and small that the Salvation of Grace is preached. Missions often involve sending individuals or groups across geographical boundaries mainly for humanitarian work to improve the economic, literacy, education, health care development for poor or disadvantaged people. Evangelism on the other hand, involves the preaching of a set of beliefs for the purpose of conversion. The earliest examples of Christian missionary activity is recorded in writings that eventually come to form much of the New Testament. Many of these letters were written by the Apostle Paul; his missionary journeys focused primarily in the area of Asia Minor and Greece.
The debate was still raging in the early churches especially at Antioch, Cilicia and Syria about the nature of this new religion - Christianity; the disagreements about salvation and how the Gentiles were to fit into the new Christian church was still unsettled. After the Jerusalem Council held its big meeting (Acts 15:1-35) Paul set on his second missionary journey. It is on this journey that he meets and recruits Timothy; thus forming an unbreakable bond of sharing the gospel, mentorship and brother love. In this week's lesson we will,
- Review how Paul added Timothy to his missionary team and their labors in spreading the Gospel from Derbe to Philippi;
- Reflect on those characteristics needed for members of a successful evangelism team; and
- Spreadthe Gospel in every aspect of our lives.
Bible Background: ACTS 16:1-15
Devotional Reading: Matthew 8:18-22
When we are sensitive to God's leading and open to changing our plans, we can be a part of the expansion of His Kingdom. How can we be sensitive to God's plans for the expansion of His Kingdom here on earth? Join us as we explore this question.
Sunday School will begin at the conclusion of the 7:15 AM service
The Adult Class will meet in the main sanctuary promptly at 8:30 AM
"And after he has seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured togo into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them." ACTS 16:10

November is National Adoption Month
This month is a time for raising awareness of the tens of thousands of children who need loving, permanent families. This year's National Adoption Day celebration will be on Saturday, November 21, 2015. This annual, one-day event has made the dreams of thousands of children come true by working with policymakers, practitioners and advocates to finalize adoptions and create and celebrate adoptive families. In 2014, more than 4,960 children were adopted by their forever families during the 15th annual National Adoption Day celebration in 405 cities across the United States.
Metropolitan, start to think about how you may be able to help by becoming an advocate for adoption and foster care, becoming a foster or adoptive parent, a mentor for a young person or a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). For more information on how you can keep the awareness of the ministry alive in the Metropolitan Baptist Church, please send an email to Servant Bonita Martin at Bonita.mcneill@yahoo.com.
Maintain Don't Gain Challenge

Join us on November 14th and 21st at Miracle Plaza in room 270 from 12:00 - 2:00 PM to sign up for the challenge and participate in a FREE exercise class.
