SUPPORTERS
IN ACTION

Small increase, HUGE results

SHOUT OUT TO COMMON HOPE SPONSORS OF FIVE YEARS OR MORE! In May it was official. Over 175 sponsors increased their commitment by 5% during Common Hope's first ever Inflation Appeal. Sponsors with a five year anniversary were asked to increase their monthly or annual commitment by 5% ($36 or $24 per year). Common Hope could not be more grateful for the generous response.

Sponsors generate 45% of Common Hope's annual operating revenue, so an extra $2 or $3 makes a BIG DIFFERENCE. Thank you to our sponsors for all you make possible for the children and families we serve in Guatemala!

NEWS FROM
GUATEMALA

Common Hope youth plant 500 trees

Learn, organize, act! A group of 125 students from Common Hope's Antigua Youth Support Program came together to organize an extensive tree-planting activity. The project was a collaboration with the Antigua Municipal Secretary of the Environment who provided the trees as part of a reforestation project. The group's goal was to plant 500 trees in an area that had been damaged in a recent forest fire.

The project started with a special discussion led by Common Hope staff on the environment and current state of the planet. The group spent time reflecting on their roles as humans to care for the earth, and their relationship with the environment.

Maria Jos Mendoza, Long Term Volunteer who works with the Youth Program said, "It was great to see youth make the connection of how this interdependency directly affects their daily lives. I hope this experience will empower our youth to continue to be agents of change in their communities, even if it is planting one tree at a time."

Energized by the opportunity to make a difference in their community, the youth gathered early Saturday morning to put their plan into action. Armed with 500 saplings, they set out and planted all 500, transforming the damaged area into an area that will grow and thrive. Jaime Guerra, Youth Support Staff, said that on the day of the activity one of the students shared with him that they "loved seeing the transformation of the area that at first seemed like a desert into a beautiful, happy place."

About the activity Jaime said, "To see the youth plant a tree and have them know and understand why they are doing it, brings me a lot of satisfaction."

Moreover, the youth also got to check-in on the trees that had been planted the year before, reinforcing that they were participating in a project that would benefit the wider community and future generations for years to come.

CHANGE A LIFE

Sergio, a kindergartener needs sponsor

Sergio, a kindergartner from San Rafael is one of nine students being featured at this year's Common Hope Golf Classic. His family is new to Common Hope. and he would love to have a padrino (sponsor) to write letters to.

While Sergio and his brother attend school, their mother works a few days a week in the fields, hardly enough to make ends meet, let alone pay for school.

You can be a part of Sergio and his family's life by becoming his sponsor today. Contact Teresa Hermodson-Olsen or click here to complete your sponsorship!

THE 2016 SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE IS HERE!

Give the gift of education! Each year, Common Hope provides the necessary school supplies for more than 3,400 students-paying for books, supplies, and tuition. We rely on the generosity of our donors to make this happen! There are many ways you can help.

Last year we sent 10 pallets, a 20 foot container to Guatemala and raised over $30,000. We are hoping to do even more this year. If you would like to donate we need over 16,000 notebooks, 40,000 pencils and 500 calculators just to name a few.
