NEWS FROM
GUATEMALA

Food for thought: The comfort and security of

a full stomach

During difficult times caused by accidents, illness, unemployment, malnourishment, death of a family member, theft or other circumstances, Common Hope's affiliated families have access to an emergency food basket. Due to an increased need for these food baskets, Common Hope staff has re-evaluated the contents and has made small, yet significant changes that have made a big difference for our families.

SUPPORTERS
IN ACTION

Thank you, dear volunteers. You made our year.

National Volunteer Week is April 12-18 and what better way to celebrate than to highlight all the great work our volunteers do? 2014 was a great year for volunteerism, with over 2,000 hours in the U.S. office and more than 500 volunteers in Guatemala! Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Vision Team members, long-term and short-term volunteers, as well as the myriad of helpers who come to our St. Paul office, we accomplished a lot and had fun while doing it! Thank you, volunteers, for all you do!

YOU CAN

6-year-old Shannen needs a place to call home
Meet Shannen. She's 6 years old and her best friend is Jackeline. Like many children her age, she likes playing with dolls and her favorite food is pizza. She's a little girl with big dreams of becoming a veterinarian when she grows up and she loves participating in the reading club.

Shannen's family doesn't have a place of their own to call home. Shannen shares a room in her aunt's house with her sister and single mother, who left her husband due to domestic violence. Her mother can't hold down steady employment because she suffers from seizures and has lost several jobs as a result. Despite Shannen's mother's heath condition, she earns money for her family by picking coffee when she can.

Shannen's mother wants nothing more than to see her daughters graduate from school; she also wants to earn a home for her family through Common Hope's housing program.

Your support will not only encourage Shannen to stay in school, it will also create a brighter future for her family. To become Shannen's sponsor, send an email to Teresa Hermodson-Olsen, call 651.917.1045, or sponsor her online
