This month is a special one for Muslims all over the world. This year, October is the month of Hajj. Hajj, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, is a holy pilgrimage to Mecca that all physically and financially capable Muslims must complete at least once in their lives. Hajj is a beautiful experience to behold, as every year, Muslims from around the world congregate at Mecca to worship God and follow in the footsteps of the prophets Abraham and Muhammad (peace be upon them), among others. It is said that when one goes for Hajj, God erases all of his/her past sins.

We at UMF wish the best of luck to everyone going for Hajj this year. Insha'Allah (God willing) may all of your sins be forgiven and may the rest of us also be blessed with the chance to go for Hajj in the near future.

Brothers and Sisters, please remember to give generously during this blessed time. We at UMF do all we can to serve our community, but we need your help to keep doing it. Give with open hearts and insha'Allah (God willing), God will bless all of us beyond our wildest dreams.

Sincerely,

Sara Beg

UMF Hunger Team

UMF Hungerteam has been serving the impoverished in Seminole county for the last 10 years, but today was extra special with the launch of our Breakfast and Birthday clubs. We had henna tattoos for the homeless women contributed by 2 donors and designed by 3 expert artists, beautiful delicious home baked sprinkle star and moon-shaped cookies baked by a young mom and her sons and a very special birthday cake for 2 of the homeless children in the shelter, baked by a volunteer.

We arranged gifts for the birthday children and even had star-shaped mylar balloons for all the children which our UMF Guides personalized for each child at the shelter in English and Arabic. We hosted trivia on the solar system and trivia participants got to win prizes in raffles, like a bicycle donated by a generous business. It was touching to watch our UMF Guides enjoying cooking a hot breakfast and giving to those in need and being politely reciprocated by these people who may be poor in their wallets but are rich at heart.

What makes me say this? Maybe it was the poor man I overheard talking to a friend on the phone encouraging him not to give up and to keep struggling until he was out of the woods. Or the man who said he intended to make sure it was a good day today and only needed the clothes on his back and one set for work so he was happy with what he had. Or maybe it was all of them who had us wait until the person we called out first as the grand raffle prize winner came back out so he wouldn't miss out on winning the bicycle, despite the fact they had been waiting for an hour for the winners to be announced. I thank God for the lessons I learn from these good souls and from the Hungerteam and Guides volunteers and Lieutenants and Advisors. They are such a blessing in this world and make a world of difference, more than they will ever know.

October 4th was an awesome evening for our UMF Guides with fun bowling, learning about money management with Sharia Portfolio's Naushad Virji (who handed out awesome gifts to all of our Guides) and our special guest, former NBA player Mahmoud Abdul Rauf and his inspiring presentation on being successful through hard work and prayer! Alhamdulillah (all praise is due to God), it was an amazing day for the Guides!

'Living United' is the slogan of Heart of Florida United Way (HFUW), an organization with whom United Muslim Foundation (UMF) Hungerteam is partnering with to help serve the underprivileged in Seminole County. UMF and HFUW met last month to discuss ways in which we can help each other aid children who are hungry and who need mentors.

UMF Executive Director Masuma Virji stated: "We are both organizations committed to working 'United' to serve the community and promote volunteerism. In joining HFUW as a Gifts in Kind Center partner, and with UMF working with HFUW school VISTAs and HFUW helping promote UMF Hungerteam's Breakfast club through their network, we are able to harness a synergy working together that we pray will reach farther to help feed the needy - body and mind."
