UMF Scholarship

UMF is excited to announce our Scholarship award winner for 2013!

Alhamdulil-Lah the recipient of UMF's annual $4,000 scholarship this year is a long time volunteer of UMF: Br. Abbas Dewji of Orlando, pictured below volunteering at one of UMF's charity events years ago when he was only a child.

Here's a little about Abbas's plans for the future:

"Inshallah coming in the fall, I plan on attending the University of Florida where I plan to be majoring in Chemistry. From there I hope to go to pursue a Doctorate in Pharmacy in Graduate School. As the community has done so much for me, I aspire to use the skills that I will learn to one day give back as much as I possibly can. In the meantime, I plan to continue what I have already been doing in lending my time and work effort to those who are not a lucky as I have been in my life. I am very grateful for all God has given me and it is only reasonable that I attempt to pass on his blessings unto others."

EXPLORE          EXPERIENCE            EMPOWER
April and May are Moviemaking Months at Guides. Each troop is developing a film presentation to discuss how they were empowered through the themes covered so far. Our Special Guest Speaker this week will be short film Writer, Director and Actor Ali Imran Zaidi, whom we are honored and excited to have visit our Guides.

UMF Guides are encouraged to think out of the box to write, enhance, change or edit scripts as they like. And our Lieutenants are on board to encourage creativity and to help their troops along as they explore, experience and come up with an amazing production of their own. E-mail umfguides@unitedmuslimfoundation.org to find out more about how you can join in the fun too!

UMF Hungerteam

The March homeless feeding was a great success. Our many young volunteers who came out from the IEC Madrasah to help busied themselves making breakfast that included pancakes, eggs and bagels which were served outside to the needy.

"These feedings not only provide meals for the homeless, but also provide an excellent opportunity to interact with Sanford's increasing needy community. In addition, these Hunger Team Events give our Muslim community a chance to turn inwards and gain humility in appreciating all that we take for granted on a daily basis." says Zainab Alidina, UMF Hungerteam Director.

UMF Hungerteam was also able to help this month, with the blessing of our UMF members who care, a lady in need referred to us by Shepard's Hope Clinic, who had been unable to buy new clothes for 10 years and helped to fill a container of clothes going out to India through Helping Hands for Relief.

Chaplains Conference at Yale University

UMF's TeenCentral.Net Communications Director, Farha Fazel, was invited to be a panelist on Youth Engagement with Imam Khalid Latif at the Chaplain's Conference held at Yale University. Ms. Fazel presented some keys encouraging youths to partake in community events and announced UMF's Muslim Portal on TeenCentral.Net

Attendees, who ranged from chaplains, to mental health providers to community leaders were excited to hear about this exciting new initiative. Many attendees signed up to become affiliates and will be announcing this program to their respective communities. This forum provided an opportunity to network with community leaders who share similar sentiments of the necessity of UMF Muslim Portal.

UMF Da'wah

UMF Volunteers at Spring Fiesta Da'wah

Alhamdulil-Lah people have been calling Why Islam in great numbers and four people have Masha-Allah converted to Islam after learning more about the message of Peace, thanks in part due to the Billboards that UMF and other masaajid contributed towards putting up all over Orlando.

UMF volunteers also helped at the annual Spring Fiesta  Da'wah Booth that Why Islam put up in picturesque Lake Eola for the weekend. Enjoy our little video of the event created to air on AhlulBayt TV!

UMF-MWO-JIC Ladies 'Intra-faith planning' Coffee

On March 20th, ladies from Muslim Women of Orlando and Jafaria Islamic Center joined United Muslim Foundation in planning an intra-faith partnership to foster strong relations between the Shia and Sunni communities in Orlando. It was a vibrant group and being the small world that it is, we discovered family relationships and friendships from the past that linked us all in a beautiful web that serves to strengthen the bonds of sisterhood we already share as Muslims.
