Safar 1434
We are on the cusp of a new year, watching and waiting as 2012 draws to a close. This is a time for new beginnings, new hopes and dreams, and also a time of immense gratitude. As we usher in the new year, we mustn't forget to thank Allah (swt)  for the year that has passed and for the year to come. Only Allah (swt) knows how much time we have left on this earth; so as you contemplate the new year and aspire to new goals, remember to make every moment count. We'll never know when our time is going to be up, so let's do what we can to give more to others while we still can.

The holiday season is a great time to give back to the community and remember those less fortunate than ourselves. You can make a significant difference at UMF by a very small contribution that will go a long way to help those who are hungry and homeless, teach children and help teens, and help to raise Islamic awareness and promote unity. Your donation helps sustain our Hungerteam, Guides, Teen-Port and Outreach activities that help make a difference in our society.

Please consider making a tax-deductible gift to support UMF.
We are currently $130,000 short of reaching our goal. Remember,
Every Dollar Makes a Difference.

Your donation can be made by any of the following methods:
  1. Donate online here
  2. Mail your contribution to P.O Box 952934, Lake Mary, FL 32795

UMF Hungerteam

In memory of Sandy Hook's Children

UMF Hungerteam was contacted by the Goldsborough Westside Historical Association to collect 20 toys for the local needy children in Sanford. Within only a few days UMF Hungerteam collected these toys to deliver in time for Christmas in memory of the 20 children whose lives were lost in Newtown, Connecticut.

 Hungerteam Feedings

As usual, UMF Hungerteam had a feeding on the third Saturday of the month. Christmas and the New Year were right around the corner, and this month we were fortunate to have many donations and volunteers. We had about 40 bags of donated items this month, including children's toys, children's clothing, men and women's clothing, and household items in addition to the fresh fruit and vegetables that people dropped off.

  Hungerteam Shake

While some of the volunteers set up the tables for donations, others hit the kitchen to cook up some hot pancakes, scrambled eggs and pastries to serve the children and women inside the shelter. Plates were also prepared and placed outside the shelter where members of the Sanford community could come and pick up some hot breakfast.

One Hungerteam Volunteer also hand-knitted 20 hoodies and scarves to keep poor cold babies warm during the winter.

 Hungerteam Group 12/12

All in all, it was a very heart-warming experience as always and immensely satisfying for UMF to unite as a whole and serve the needy community this holiday season. Join us again in January as we get together to serve the local needy in Sanford. To RSVP simply sign up here for a volunteer spot at the next Hungerteam monthly feeding or to help with our weekly Panera pickups for the needy. UMF Guides "Take Off"

 UMF Noor Guides Feathery Flight

This past weekend, the Noor Guides were in for a treat as they gathered to discuss this month's theme, "Taking Flight". The guides listened intently to stories relating to birds, such as in Suratul Feel. Each Guide got a chance to share what they knew about the winged creatures and what experiences they might have had with them. They crafted birds of their own using their creativity and some help from the Guide leaders, who were delighted to see the children's artistic talent.

The guides met with a special surprise when a special winged guest appeared: Parrot Zazu! UMF Noor Guides learned how to care for a bird, including the bird's diet and how it interacts with people. The Guides got a chance to play with Zazu and even got to see him do some tricks! Afterwards, everyone joined in for a snack. Alhamdulillah, our first Noor Guide event was a 'flying' success.

UMF Guides Take to the Skies

The UMF Guides went above and beyond last weekend on their first field trip to the Aeorism Flight Academy in Sanford, Florida. A once in a lifetime opportunity was offered to UMF guides from ages nine and up to learn all about careers in flight and perform hands-on experiences.

"I could see myself being the first hijabi pilot!" said Zahra Kermali, a United Muslim Foundation's salaam girls guide, after an introduction by Manolo Calderón, a flight instructor, on what it takes to be a pilot and all the great benefits that come along with it.

After a tour around through the historical hallways of Aeorism, Mohammed Ali Saad, a flight instructor and UMF volunteer who helped put this event together for our excited Guides, led the group to another building on campus where the flight simulators brought excitement to the attendees' faces.

According to Mr. Calderon, the simulators in this particular building cost more than the airplanes out in the field; to be specific, more than one million dollars per simulator. UMF Guides were amazed at what an advantage they had for being able to even take a step onto the system and sit behind the wheel of a pilot. Mr. Calderon and Dia Fouly, an aeorism flight instructor, even taught the group how to take off and make a smooth landing.

"I expect a wonderful and bright future for all the (UMF Guides) group. They impressed all of us on how they followed the instructions and flew the airplane in the simulator session we had together, " said Mr. Fouly.

 Girl Guides Flight

Each UMF guide was allowed 5 to 10 minutes to fly the airplane simulator through a real life map of the Aeorism facility. To prove how true-to-life the simulator really was, the UMF Guides were led out to the runway where lines of planes waited to take off.

Some UMF Guides were lucky enough to witness a plane taking off and another plane landing from the nearby Sanford International Airport, right behind the campus. The group was so close to the runway that all, if not most, of the UMF guides covered their ears and squinted their eyes in order to survive the wind and noise pollution from the planes.

A trip that was intended to last only three hours took four hours because the UMF Guides just didn't want it to end. Toward the conclusion of the trip, Masuma Virji, UMF Guides Director who planned the event, asked some of the Guides about their favorite moments and what they learned from the trip. Their responses were all summarized in three words, "It was awesome!"

2012 Community Interfaith

On December 1st, UMF sponsored a diverse faith community gathering commemorating the month of Muharram at the Al-Ahad Islamic Center in Allentown, PA.  The Interfaith gathering was centered on the universal themes of "submission and sacrifice" and aimed at promulgating an awareness of the sacrifice by Husayn (AS), the grandson of the Holy Prophet, beyond the walls of the Islamic Center and helping to clarify misunderstandings that are caused by media hostility towards Islam.  To aid in this cause, UMF handed out introductory Discover Islam DVDs and pamphlets during the event.

The panel consisted of two Christian clergy, Archbishop Julius Licata and Rev. Bruce Irwin, and two Muslim speakers, Mr. Brian Anthony and Prof. Mohamed H. Rajmohamed. The panel spoke of the importance of submission and sacrifice in the religious lives of both Christians and Muslims and of how Husayn (AS) epitomized these concepts in his actions.

Mr. Anthony reminded the audience that in order to be successful we have to completely humble ourselves before the Almighty, for success comes from God alone.

Prof. Rajmohamed emphasized the importance of seeing God's beauty in everything.  This was illustrated with the example of how Lady Zainab, the sister of Husayn, carried the banner and message of Kerbala after Ashura, and when she was asked about the tragedy of Kerbala, her response was, "I saw nothing but beauty in it."

Rev. Irwin talked about the importance of upholding the truth, and how it is the duty of each person to stand up for what is right -- even if we are standing alone.

Archbishop Licata called upon us to remember our common love of God that transcends this world; a place we can all work together as brothers and sisters. He pointed out where we go from here and how we affect the unity protrayed in events like these is through co-operative endeavors like the one UMF and KidsPeace are embarking on through launching our Muslim Teen-Port on TeenCentral.net.  This will not only provide a service to Muslim teens but also create an awareness of Islam and everyday Muslims.

Archbishop Licata said of his experience from the event:
"I was a little anxious. I arrived a little early on that day and I could not have been more surprised and happy. From the moment I walked into the Center the people were so gracious, warm, inviting and loving. I was so comfortable and felt like I had known these beautiful people for a very long time. The service was beautiful and enlightening and, for a moment, while I was speaking, I felt as though we had been granted a brief look into eternity. Because I truly believe that our paradise will be a place where we are all one in the sight of God. I believe we experienced that on December 1st."

Seminole State College Presentation on Islam

UMF was honored to be invited to speak at Seminole State College for a presentation on Islam in a World Religions classroom. We quizzed the students on Islam 411 as well as some cool facts, and discovered that most students did not know that Muslims believe in all the prophets from Prophet Adam to Prophet Musa a.s. and that they were very open to learning more. Presenter Dr. Bashir Datoo also spoke on the philosophical aspect of Islam, being a religion of balance and moderation, which the instructor of the class said he was delighted to hear for the first time in a presentation on Islam. After our presentation we handed out informative brochures on Islam and so many students wanted a copy of the translation of the Holy Qur'an that we ran out and had to ask students to contact UMF for more copies. Alhamdulil-Lah we were warmly received and enjoyed our audience and we've been invited to return to present to other incoming classes in the future as well.

 UMF TeenPort

A first of it's kind... A helpline for Muslim Teens, Powered by Teens!

UMF has recently partnered with KidsPeace to launch an exciting new Muslim Portal on TeenCentral.Net. TeenCentral.Net is an anonymous helpline designed to allow teens to counsel other teens under the guidance of psychology and counseling experts. Unlike other secular helplines, the special Muslim portal will allow Muslim teens to have a place to receive counsel from other Muslim teens who face similar day-to-day problems and concerns.

UMF is excited to announce that the Muslim Portal on TeenCentral.Net, UMF TeenPort, is expected to launch Spring 2013, inshaAllah. We anticipate this free service will meet an unfilled need for our youths, promote Islamic awareness as well as encourage dialogue between parents and teens.  At present, we are looking for dedicated volunteer teen counselors, as well as mental health professionals and organizations to become affiliates. To get involved, please contact UMF TeenPort at UMFTeenPort@unitedmuslimfoundation.org

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TeenCentral.Net?

TeenCentral.Net is an anonymous help-line website that has been developed by experts in teen counseling and psychology. This professionally monitored website provides a password protected, safe cyber-space for teens to work out their issues.

Why do we need a Muslim portal on TeenCentral.Net?

All teens face similar problems, but the guidance provided to one group of teens may not be suitable to all.  As Islam is a way of life, it is necessary for Muslim teens to be recognized as a diverse group who may need separate guidance that aligns with Islamic values.  Unlike other help-lines, our Muslim portal on TeenCentral.net allows teens to help other teens through relatable and religiously appropriate advice.  Furthermore, this provides an opportunity for Muslims to learn from one another in addition to providing another venue to support interfaith and learning. A Muslim administrator as well as experts in psychology and teen counseling monitor the site consistently for appropriateness and content.

When will this Muslim Portal be ready?

InshaAllah, we intend to launch the Muslim portal Spring 2013.

What fees are associated with TeenCentral.Net? Is it free to use?

TeenCentral.Net is free to use, review or even browse!  No fees!

What is a volunteer counselor?

A volunteer counselor is a trained youth over the age of 18, who commits to providing guidance to teenagers in this portal.

How many hours does a volunteer counselor need to complete a week?

A volunteer counselor commits to being on TeenCentral.Net for 2 to 5 hours a week on a day of their choice.  You can choose the time frame that fits your schedule and the minimum of two hours does not need to be completed in one bulk set.  You can always volunteer more hours!

Does TeenCentral.Net provide volunteer counselors training?

Absolutely! TeenCentral.Net provides required training to get started and to learn the inner workings of TeenCentral.Net.  United Muslim Foundation provides additional training to supplement training that addresses some major concerns of Muslim participants. For more information on the training process, visit: http://www.teencentral.net/training/

Where do I go for training? Do I need to be in the United States to attend training?

Training and participating in TCN is fully online - you do not need to visit any sites to attend training.  You are welcome to contact our TeenCentral Communications Director at any time with questions or concerns

Can I see a copy of the training manual?

Absolutely! The TeenCentral.Net official training manual is provided as a PDF at the following link: http://www.teencentral.net/training/teencentral%20net%20training%20manual.pdf

How is a 4-part training enough to counsel?

Remember, you are not becoming a psychologist in these few hours.  Your posts are monitored by professionals in psychology and teen counseling as well as a Muslim administrator for content and appropriateness. TeenCentral.Net encourages teens to solve their issues by utilizing our guidance and introspection questions.  We always advise teens to turn to religious leaders and mental health professionals when necessary, thereby justifying a simple 4-part training process.

What if my Internet is down and I can't get onto the site on my scheduled day?

Computer problems happen! If you are unable to get onto the website or are traveling for an extended period of time, please contact UMF's TeenCentral Communications Director. The director will find you a replacement for that day.

I live outside of the United States, can I still volunteer?

Absolutely! Simply be mindful of the rules of the living in the country of the teen user and specify "international volunteer" when requesting an application.

But, I'm not a religious expert or a trained psychologist! Can I still counsel?

No problem!  You can still become a counselor! A Muslim administrator as well as an expert in psychology and teen counseling will always review your posts before publishing and edit as necessary. You are recommended to use Qur'anic text and Islamic history to relate Islam to teenage users.

I don't know if I will be a good counselor!

You will be! Don't let fear keep you from perusing this opportunity.  TeenCentral.Net and UMF will work with you and help you feel comfortable in your counseling.  Also, remember, your work is always checked and approved by administrators before posted to the teen user.

I am a Psychology student. Can I use this volunteer opportunity as an internship?

Absolutely! Simply contact our TeenCentral Communications Director before beginning training. We will advise you as to how to proceed.

Can I get a letter of recommendation?

Absolutely!  Contact our TeenCentral Communications Director to complete a waiver of confidentiality. A letter of recommendation will be drafted and sent within a week of receiving waiver.

Will anyone know I'm a counselor? Will I be contacted by TCN?

In efforts to remain confidential, counselors' contact information is kept private from co-counselors. Only our TeenCentral Communications Director and Director of TeenCentral.Net are aware of your contact information. You may be contacted by TeenCentral.Net for two reasons: 1) We need additional help on a select day to answer posts or 2) Your posts have a consistent error that needs to be addressed directly.

Can I give a teen user my contact information?

In efforts to remain confidential, counselors are not permitted to provide any identifying characteristics or contact information to users, including (but not limited to: name, phone number, email or even school name. Any such personal information if provided will be deleted by the supervisor before publishing.

Are users truly anonymous?

Absolutely!  Users are not required to provide any specific information to log-on to our site and post stories. We do not maintain any database of users and cannot correspond with our users at any time.  The only information we collect is demo-graphical and is utilized to help provide appropriate responses.  (For example,  our demographic data may indicate that user lives in a rural area, therefore suggesting taking a local bus to attend an lecture downtown may not be appropriate.)

I can't commit to being an online counselor, how else can I help?

Spread the word!  In order for our portal to become successful, we need to let teenagers know that they have an opportunity to post anonymously and get advice from their fellow teens.   Also, monetary donations are welcome! Support United Muslim Foundation's initiatives for the youth by visiting http://unitedmuslimfoundation.org

UMF TeenPort at Al-Ahad Islamic Center's Seminar

The Save Family, Save Community seminar was a successful venture in open dialogue for the community of Al-Ahad Islamic Center. UMF TeenPort took an active role in preparing for this unique panel, by preparing flyers, developing presentations and suggesting a youth's opinion on major concerns. This opportunity to work with community leaders, provided insight into the generational differences in the perception of youth concerns and how to address these differences. Panelists, including Sheikh Jaffer Ladak, Dr. Adil Khan and Dr. Shah, provided participants with professional insight on how the community can begin to address the concerns of our youths.  Many participants raised questions of drugs, alcohol, peer pressure through a in-depth discussion of developing a strong Muslim identity within the culture of one's upbringing and society. Youth participants suggested the need to encourage their fellow youths to attend the mosque by providing a judgement free zone.

UMF TeenPort was highlighted as one of the active solutions to the concerns discussed as UMF TeenPort provides anonymous cyberspace for Muslim teens to receive help.  Panelists answered questions on the double-life of a Muslim teen and difficulties of growing up within a society that is often unaware of Islamic principles. This interactive, informative seminar highlighted the key concerns of our youths and validated the need for UMF TeenPort as a stepping stone for overcoming these evolving concerns. It was immensely important for the discussion of youth concerns to begin within our own community and an honor for UMF to be able to announce this new initiative as a solution.
