In The Name of Allah, The Universally Merciful, The Singularly Compassionate

As-salamu `aleikum wa rahmatul Allahi wa barakatuh

brothers and sisters,

This Ramadan, as the new Executive Director of UMF, I was blessed to visit many masjids and attended many wonderful events organized by diverse Muslim organizations in Orlando and its surroundings. I witnessed people gathering to pray together, to recite Qur'an together, to feed the homeless, to fill gift bags for children in hospitals, to unite with other groups to organize iftars and eat together, and to share meals with people of other religions. It was such a wonderful experience. I witnessed the beauty of the Islamic teachings alive and well. Alhamdulilah!

Now, as Ramadan ends I fear what I call the "Post Ramadan Syndrome", which we all sometimes experience, where the "himmah (energy) fades away and the enthusiasm diminishes. Old habits return and groups work separate. I pray that Ramadan's spirit will continue to survive from this year on.

Allah (swt) says in 2/200: "And when you have performed, and completed, your holy rites, remember God as you remember your fathers." The holy rite of fasting has just ended, so let us not fall into heedlessness and remember Allah (swt); for being conscious of Allah is the ultimate goal.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was not only called "The Messenger of Allah" but he was also called "Allah's servant" (`abd). Thus, servitude is the highest state of the spiritual journey which we all should aspire to attain to join our beloved Prophet in the highest Garden.

I pray we will continue to be united in prayers, in celebrations and in offering community services and representing Islam through pious actions.

`Eid Mubarak everyone.

Sincerely,

Amany Shalaby
