There are as many Tibetan designs as flavors of Ben & Jerry's. Today Tibetan rug designs can best be described as transitional or modern. There is a huge Tibetan community in the Kathmandu valley that employs almost a half million weavers. What hasn't changed is their weaving techniques that are distinctly different from rugs hand-knotted in other regions such as Persian or Turkish carpets.
Tibetan rugs, despite their rich traditional history which has spanned centuries, were mostly un-changed until one decade after the Chinese invasion in 1959. Master weavers fled over the Himalayas from Tibet to Nepal and Tibetan Rugs haven't been the same since. Tibetan rug designs were no longer limited by government requirements to depict only Buddhist imagery. Driven by the market economy of the early 60's, the European market developed a demand for rugs from Nepal.
One of the greatest advances in today's Tibetan rugs are their dying tecniques which allow color consistency. This assures that the sample we send will match the finished area rug.
