Up until a few decades ago, if you could find a hand-made Indian rug it was usually in a department store. Indian rugs were incredibly crude and loosely hand-knotted in an Aubusson design. The yarn had very little twist and it was woven in metric sizes such as 5x8. The color was a basic ivory with a dark accent. Early Indian Rugs were inexpensive, poor quality, and very unattractive.

Today, Indian production is very sophisticated and rivals its more famous competitors, such as Persia (Iran) and Nepal. India is now the world's premier supplier of decorative area rugs.
