Up until a few decades ago, if you could find a handmade Indian rug it was probably in a department store. It was incredibly crude and loosely hand-knotted in an Aubusson design. The yarn had very little twist and it was woven in metric sizes such as 5x8. The color was a basic ivory with a dark accent. It was inexpensive, poor quality and unattractive.

Today, however, Indian production is very sophisticated and rivals its more famous competitors, namely Persia and Nepal. India is now the world's premier supplier of decorative area rugs.
