Greetings!
Contrary to the cliche, the labor required to create a hand knotted area rug is exactly like recreating the wheel. But you get what you pay for. The reality is high quality area rugs cost a significant sum of money, which is precisely why we should be treating these purchases as investments and not like perishables with sell-by expiration dates.
Mass production machine-made area rugs don't age gracefully. The cognoscenti would never mistake the patina of a hundred-year-old Peshawar with the taint and tarnish of a shoddy look-alike synthetic. Which is precisely why cheesy rugs spend eternity lying in landfills, not on living room floors.

Which came first? The chicken or the egg? Having spent my entire 40-year career in the carpet and area rug business, nothing makes me happier than when I see an interior designer peruse our showroom without a handful of fabric samples. It is so much better to glean your color palette from a rug rather than vice versa. A high quality area rug will last for generations and never go out of style. I have yet to hear that the Dali Llama called and wants his Tibetan area rug back and would like to see something in a high pile synthetic shag. This is not a pitch for spending a bundle of money, just for spending it consciously.
