Principal's Message

Our school has partnered with Learning for Life (LFL) program
which uniquely integrates academic content with character development lessons. Learning for Life features grade-appropriate, theme oriented lesson plans that will be used
in your child's classroom to enhance and support the core curriculum. Lessons are designed to reinforce academic, social, ethical, and character development skills in a variety of areas, such as critical and creative thinking, conflict
resolution, decision making, interpersonal relationships, practical life skills, self-esteem, writing and language arts, citizenship, and personal fitness. Each lesson includes a Family/Take Home activity that insures that you are also a vital part of this character education program.

We are excited to share this collaboration with you and you can visit www.learningforlife.org to learn more information about their character programs or you can contact Meredith Kelley-CHILL Counselor (407-672-3100 ext 3002153) at our school.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jennifer Sanders, Principal

Physical Education News

Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new year of Physical Education at Aloma Elementary. I am excited to be your child's teacher and look forward to helping your child learn about fitness, nutrition and health.

Important PE Reminders:
  • PE Participation forms: Safety is our priority. Please make sure you complete and turn in the PE Participation form so that we are aware of any needs your child has. Every child must have this to participate and these must be turned in by September 2.
  • Shoes: Your child has PE three times each week and he has it on the same day every week. Please make sure you know which days your child comes to PE so he can dress properly in athletic shoes and clothes that fit the weather. Sandals, flip flops (against dress code!), high heels are not SAFE for PE; children wearing the wrong shoes will not participate.
  • Clothing: PE is outside so send children in clothes that fit the weather. Students need comfortable clothing that will allow them to move freely, sweat, sit on the floor or the ground - don't allow your child to wear something that can't get dirty. Girls who wear dresses must wear shorts under their dress.
  • Excuse notes: Participation is mandatory unless a note from a parent or doctor indicates otherwise for a period of time. Please be sure that I am made aware in writing of any modifications that need to be made to your child's participation. This can be a written note, a Dojo message or an email.
  • Labels: Please put your child's name on EVERYTHING. I will happily return jackets, sweaters, water bottles and anything else left at PE, if I know who it belongs to. If there is not a name, I put everything in Lost & Found at the end of each day. Valuable items like glasses, phones, etc. will be left at the front desk.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at: [email protected] (best way to contact me), a Class Dojo message or leave a voicemail at 407/672-3100 x3002228. If needed, I will get back to you after 3:30 PM.
And, please remember that physical activity needs to be a DAILY thing. Encourage your child to get out and play and enjoy some time playing with your children!

Basic Principles of Good Parent/Child Communication
  • Let your child know you are interested, involved and that you will help when needed.
  • Turn off the television or put the phone down when your child wants to talk.
  • Unless other people are specifically meant to be included, hold conversations in privacy.  The best communication between you and your child will occur when others are not around.
  • Embarrassing your child or putting them on the spot in front of others will not lead to good communication.
  • Don't stand over your child. Physically get down on your child's level, then talk.
  • If you are very angry about a behavior or incident, don't attempt communication until you are calm.
  • If you are very tired, you will have to make an extra effort to be an active listener. Active listening is hard work and can be difficult when your mind and body are already tired. You may need to set a time and date for the talk later, so you can be an active listener.
  • Listen carefully and politely. Don't interrupt your child when trying to tell a story. Be as courteous to your child as you would be to your best friend.
  • Don't ask why, but do ask what happened, not why.
  • Keep adult talk, preaching, and moralizing to a minimum. They are not helpful in keeping communication open.
  • Don't use put down words or statements. This will shut your child down and close real communication.
  • Show that you accept your child, regardless of what he or she has done/not done.
  • Reinforce your child's efforts at keeping communication open. Do this by accepting your child and praising their efforts to communicate.

Winter Park Health Foundation: Coordinated Youth Initiative
In the belief that Healthy Kids Make Better Students and Better Students Make Healthy Communities, the Winter Park Health Foundation (WPHF) is pleased to sponsor a variety of programs aimed at tending to the mental and physical well-being of the children in our community. The programs, offered through a unique partnership with Orange County Public Schools (OCPS), fall under the umbrella of the Coordinated Youth Initiative (CYI). Programs include the School Nursing Initiative, School-Based Health Centers (staffed by Nurse Practitioners), CHILL counseling program and the Healthy School Teams (HST). They are offered in the OCPS schools serving Winter Park and surrounding communities. (These schools make up the Winter Park Consortium of Schools and include Winter Park High School and its elementary and middle feeder schools.)
