Principal's Message

As Aloma continues to expose and teach our students about our global neighbors, last week we had a special treat from the country of China. Students in grades 2-5 were able to watch and participate in an authentic Chinese Acrobatic show in our school cafeteria. I would encourage you to help your child take some time to research and read about this large country on the other side of the globe.

Students in grades 4-5 will begin a series of 12 writing camps at Aloma in order to prepare for the upcoming FSA Writing test. We will be hosting our FSA Night for parents of students in Grades 3-5 on January 21 from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM. We will be discussing the rapidly approaching FSA testing season and show you how you can support your student at home. We will also be offering one session in Spanish.

Thank you, as always, for helping Aloma to be an amazing place to learn!

It will be a great week!

CHILL for a Minute
Happy New Year! At the start of a year, most people find themselves making an ambitious list of resolutions - the things they are going to change this next year. However, come February, that lofty list may seem closer to being impossible than being a reality. So, how can we reach our goals as parents, friends, students, or family members? Here are some thoughts:

  • Be realistic. It is just one year, so don't expect to conquer the world in that time frame. See what is feasible for you and focus on that.
  • Prioritize.  What is your TOP goal for this year? If there is just one, then focus on achieving that. Don't make so many goals that you feel overwhelmed and achieve none.
  • Make a timeline. By setting mini-goals along the way, you may find that you are able to achieve the big goal. Even adults can be overwhelmed by a large task. Break it down and chew off the small bits first.
  • Organize yourself. Maybe use a journal or checklist to keep track of your progress. Or you may want to have a friend hold you accountable.
  • Celebrate your success. Every teeny-tiny bit of progress is still progress. Feel good about the positive change you are making.
Whether you strive to advance your career this year, or spend more time with your loved ones, or shed a few pounds, know that you have the power to make that happen. So, let's get started!

New Media Opportunity
Aloma has a new opportunity for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students starting in January! Mrs. Mask will be hosting Makerspace on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings in the media center! Makerspace is a place where students can create and build different items. Some of Aloma's centers include origami, chalk drawing, K'Nex, Tinker Toys, and tangrams.

The library will open at 8:00 AM on Makerspace mornings and students will need to get a pass from the front desk, then proceed to the media center.

There is a limited number of passes, but if more students want to participate, we will look at increasing the number of days that Makerspace is open.

Earbuds
Parents, as we continue to increased use of digital curriculum, we recommend that all students bring their own pair of earbuds/personal headphones for school. These are available at any discount store (Walmart, Target, General Dollar). For your convenience, PTA will also be selling earbuds in a small plastic case for $2 on the Friday Treats and Treasures cart.

Please send in your headphones labeled in a small case or Ziploc bag with your students name and their homeroom teacher's name. Thank you!
