PE Newsletter
Welcome back! There are a lot of great things happening in your child's Physical Education classes. The big news is that your children will get four days of PE each week! Three will be with me, Ms. Styron, and the fourth will be with their teachers. This is great because it means lots of opportunity to move and your kids need it! Remember that physical activity needs to be a daily thing so encourage your children to get out and play.

Your child will have PE on the same day each week so please make sure they are dressed properly in in athletic shoes and clothes that fit the weather. Athletic shoes support and protect your child's feet. Dress shoes, sandals, flip flops (against dress code) and boots are not right for running or any other physical activity so for safety sake, if a child wears the wrong type of footwear, s/he will not be permitted to participate.

Also, PE is outside unless the weather is too severe (lightening or below 50 degrees) so send children in clothes that are fit the weather. Don't allow children to wear clothes that can't get dirty; we move, we sweat, we sit on the floor or out in the field. Keeping your child safe and injury free is my first priority. I need your help by making sure they are properly dressed for physical activity.

Staying hydrated is important, in P.E. and especially in this heat. Water bottles are not required but are highly encouraged but only water is permitted (no sports drinks, flavored water, ice tea, lemonade, or soda). Please make sure the bottles have your child's name on it.

Participation is mandatory unless a note from a parent or a doctor indicates otherwise for a period of time. Please be sure that I am made aware in writing of any modifications that need to be made to your child's participation. A note to the teacher or office will be forwarded to me and will suffice.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me-

FSA Validity Study Due September 1
The Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) validity study is due for delivery to the state Board of Education on September 1. Here's what we know and what we don't know about what happens next.

We know:
  • The study will address whether the FSA test questions were aligned adequately to the Florida State Standards.
  • The study will address how well the FSA tests were administered, using a computer-based online system.
  • The state will review the validity study and decide how to release and use the results of the tests.
  • The state will set "cut scores" based on the test results to distinguish five levels of student proficiency on each test (Level 1 through Level 5). Level 3 and above will count as proficient (or passing). Selected teachers from across the state are participating in this process next week.
The state will present the cut scores to a "reactor panel" of people who will comment on their fairness and rigor in mid-September

We don't know:
  • If or when the state will release the FSA scores to schools and students.
  • If the state does release FSA scores, whether or when they will issue school grades for 2014-15.
 We will keep you informed.
