"91 Steer Clear" Weekend Closure a Success
|
The Riverside County Transportation Commission's 91 Project team thanks the Corona community and southern California commuters for a successful "91 Steer Clear" full closure of the 91 last month.
To allow crews to work safely and efficiently, the team conducted a full closure of eastbound and westbound 91 between the 71 and I-15 from Friday February 19 at 9 pm to Monday, February 22 at 4 am.
The 55-hour closure allowed crews to demolish the west side of the Maple Street Bridge, build the supporting structure for the new westbound Maple Street flyover on-ramp bridge, and pave the new eastbound 91 alignment near I-15.
All of the work was completed within the 55-hour closure period. Crews reopened the westbound 91 at 1:30 am and the eastbound 91 by 3:30 am on February 22, ahead of schedule. Construction crews also made great progress on the Maple Street flyover, so closures of the eastbound 91 were not needed the following week, as had been expected.
RCTC also appreciates the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Caltrans, neighboring city staff members, County of Riverside, County of Orange, emergency responders, Orange County Transportation Authority, Transportation Corridor Agencies and Metrolink for their contribution to this successful weekend closure.
The 91 Project team prepared a time-lapse of this closure showing the major activity that took place. To view the video, click here.

Crews to Lower Auto Center/Serfas Club Drive
|
Work is continuing in the Auto Center/Serfas Club Drive area, as crews relocate utilities, build sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and lower the roadway to provide sufficient vertical clearance for trucks traveling beneath the 91.
Work is occurring over several weeks. Crews completed the first phase of work north of the 91 during a weekend closure, February 26-29 and will conduct a second weekend closure March 18-21 to complete work south of the 91. A closure of the underpass will occur during Corona-Norco Unified School District's spring break, March 25 to April 4, when fewer motorists are on the road.
Once the roadway is lowered, capacity improvements will be available immediately on Serfas Club Drive, due to two lanes in each direction with turn pockets onto the 91. Please note that the eastbound 91 Serfas Club Drive on-ramp, which closed in September 2015, will remain closed until approximately late 2016.

Project Construction Continuing "Fast Forward;" More Work Coming Soon
|
The 91 Project is approximately 60 percent complete, with new work coming soon to the 91 and I-15. Motorists are reminded to allow extra travel time, watch for changing conditions, follow detour signs and adhere to the 55 mile per hour speed limit within the project area. Key upcoming activities include:
- Nighttime full closures of southbound 15, March 21 to April 16 from 9 pm to 5 am each night - Motorists may use eastbound 91 to exit at McKinley Street, and then reenter westbound 91 to southbound 15.
- Nighttime full closures from 10 pm to 5 am and daytime westbound travel only from 5 am to 10 pm - westbound Pomona Road between Maple Street and Smith Avenue, March 21 - May 15.
- Nighttime full closures of eastbound 91, March 28 and 29 from 11 pm to 4 am both nights - Motorists should exit the 91 at Maple Street and reenter at Paseo Grande.
- Lowering of the Buena Vista Bridge and Ontario Avenue roadway and placement of supporting structures for the bridges at Maple Street, Lincoln Avenue, Old Temescal Road and Ontario Avenue will be occurring this spring. Repaving of a section of westbound 91 also will be planned. Please watch for updates.
